She smiled and gently touched my shoulder. “I can tell you’re not feeling well. You turned green when Brooks came in with that tuna sandwich earlier. Why don’t you go to the doctor?”

I grimaced. “Going to the doctor is a full day of sitting in the clinic and waiting around because Dr. Gomer is gossiping with each and every patient about every other patient. It’s miserable. And forget about confidentiality. I went in with stomach cramps one time and by the time I was walking out to my car, my mom was calling me to ask if I’d already picked up the medicine for my gas problem.”

Lauren threw her head back and laughed. “Oh, god. No, no. Don’t go back there. We have access to a clinic through Mr. Myer. He pays for us to be able to go whenever. It’s painless, I promise. Last month, I woke up with pink eye after my niece stayed over. I got in at the clinic within half an hour. I had medicine and was back at home, raging at my sister, in less than an hour.”

“Really?”

She scooted me over with her hip and pulled out my desk drawer. Sure enough, behind a few pens, there was a card for a medical clinic. “Call and ask to see Dr. Waits. She’s the only female doctor there and, I don’t know about you, but I always prefer to see a woman. Although one of the male doctors I saw there last month was absolutely hot as sin.”

I giggled and rolled my eyes. “Dr. Waits it is. I’ll call later.”

“Winnie, no. You’re sick. Call now. I can handle the desk for this.”

More tears filled my eyes at her kindness, and I stood up and hugged her. “Thank you.”

She fake-gagged. “Ew. Emotion. Get away.”

Smiling, I hugged her again and grabbed the card. “I’ll call now.”

As it turned out, whatever access Beck had to the clinic, it was amazing. I was sitting in the waiting room thirty minutes later, filling out the patient information in a chair more comfortable than my couch at home. I wiggled deeper into it and continued jotting down my family history. I’d just finished signing the last consent form when I heard a deep voice coming closer and froze.

There wasn’t a chance in hell that I would’ve ever forgotten that voice.Sawyer.I kept my head down but peaked up through my eyelashes to watch as he walked into the office, where the secretary was waiting for me to hand back in my paperwork. In a white doctor’s coat with dark blue scrubs underneath, he had to be the hot-as-sin doctor Lauren had spotted. I swallowed thickly as he opened a file and looked through it, a pair of dark-framed glasses perched on his nose.

“Ms. Lane? Are you finished? Dr. Waits is ready to see you.” The secretary, who’d introduced herself as Trudy, called out to me, drawing Sawyer’s attention straight to me.

His eyes widened, and a smile stretched across his handsome face before he hurried around the desk that separated us and knelt in front of me. Suddenly he was right there, his scent and heat flooding my senses. “Win. I was pretty sure I was never going to see you again. What are you doing here?”

IsearchedSawyer’sblue, blue eyes, and then the rest of his face, unsure what I was looking for. When I watched his tongue stroke out to wet his lips and saw the way his eyes darkened, I realized that was what I’d been waiting to see: a sign that he was as affected by seeing me as I was him. And as I had been seeing Jack and Beck, too. “Um. Seeing Dr. Waits. Hi.”

He bit his lip and rested his hand on my thigh. “We only take care of a few companies, and none of them are schools. Did you get a new job?”

His touch, and the fact that he remembered what I did, almost two months after our night together, made me feel all fluttery. “I did. It’s a long story, but I took a job at Myers Photography and then found out I’m working for Beck.”

A flash of annoyance changed his face for a second, but then it was gone. “Beck has been keeping secrets, I see.”

I saw Trudy staring at us and shifted in the comfortable seat. “I think I’m keeping the doctor waiting.”

Sawyer stood up and offered me his hand to help me to my feet. Instead of letting my hand go, he pulled me into his chest and wrapped me in a quick hug. “I’m glad I know where to find you now, Win.”

I knew my face was red when he let me go. I stumbled back a step and then smiled at him. “Bye, Sawyer.”

He shook his head and winked. “Hardly. It’s been a while since I’ve visited Beck at the office. It’s time I popped in and checked on the shithead.”

Trudy gasped, and then laughed. “Dr. Sawyer!”

I handed her my paperwork and stepped away from Sawyer, not wanting to be guilty by association. “I don’t know him.”

She laughed and hooked her thumb over her shoulder. “Back to work, doctor. Let Ms. Lane get on with her day. You’re holding Dr. Waits up.”

Sawyer didn’t look the least bit sorry as he pulled me in for another hug and pressed a chaste kiss to the side of my head. “Somehow, you’re just as beautiful under these florescent bulbs as you were in stained glass light that night, Win. It’s not fair. How’s a man supposed to focus?”

Trudy, having clearly heard his words, grinned at me. “Good luck resisting that kind of charm, honey.”

I floated away from him, wondering whose life I’d stumbled into. It so very clearly wasn’t my own. My life wasn’t filled with hot men hitting on me and calling me beautiful. It just wasn’t. I bumped into the doorframe and giggled, which just left me even more embarrassed. “Um… Bye!”
