She looked up at the sky and sighed. “You’d just think I was a horrible person.”

“I doubt that. From what I can tell, you’re pretty fucking great.”

She laughed, and I fucking loved how it sounded so free in this place I called my sanctuary.

“There’s so much I wish I could say… but I feel like it would just drive an even bigger wedge between the club.”

My head bobbed in agreement. “It does feel like shit is falling apart.”

“I’m sorry for that.”

“You say that as if you think it’s your fault.”

She sighed, lying fully on the blanket. Her beautiful curves looked amazing in contrast to the black and red checkered fleece beneath her. Those brown eyes were staring up above us, gazing at nothing because all there was to look at was a vast cloudless sky.

“Because I think it is.”

Now she had my full attention.

“What do you mean?”

She nibbled on her lip, and I could tell she was holding a wealth of secrets in those milk chocolate orbs. “I wish I could tell you, Sandman, but I just can’t.”

I somehow understood that. Whatever she was keeping secret had to be big—big enough to keep her silent.

Hopefully, she’d open up to me, eventually. But out of respect I changed the subject.

Hearing her say my road name felt so informal. Maybe it was because I got used to Lindy calling me Jesse, but for some reason I wanted her to say it, too.

“You can call me Jesse if you want.”

She sat up on her elbows. “Your name is Jesse?”

I laughed. “Yeah, why does that surprise you?”

She grinned. “I love that name! I had the biggest crush on Uncle Jesse onFull House. He was hot as hell.”

Chuckling, I shook my head. It wasn’t the first time my name had been compared to John Stamos. “If only I could pull chicks like him. I’d be set for life,” I joked.

“You’d be surprised by how many women in the clubhouse want you, Sandman… er, I mean, Jesse. There’s a line of girls who’ve been waiting for you to be single.”

My thoughts ruffled back to that weird moment with Havarti in my room, and I smirked. “Well, unfortunately I’m not interested in being with anyone right now; Lindy broke me.”

“What happened? I thought you two had something special?”

I sighed. “She said I wasn’t good enough for her, that she could never be tied down to a dirty biker.”

Shasta grimaced. “Ouch. Ugh, sorry, but that bitch needed to go.”

A loud boisterous laugh belted out of me, startling a group of birds in a nearby tree. “Well, she’s gone all right, and taken every bit of me with her.”

Shasta’s slender hand came over my stomach, and she leaned over me to look me in the eye. “She didn’t deserve you.”

Fuck, don’t look her in the eyes, dummy. This is how you get sucked in.

My massive hands curled around hers, and I covered it right over my heart.

“Yeah, and Sabbath doesn’t deserve you, either.”
