“If that’s okay with you, yeah. His band starts at ten. I promised I would at least make an appearance.”

“Alright, lead the way, Newbie.” She smiled as they got up and said a prayer of thanks that she had driven Kristin’s car tonight instead of taking the bus as she normally would have done. That was a conversation she didn’t want to have.

“What happened to theassholepart of that name?”

“I’ve since decided that may have been a misjudgment of character on my part. Don’t get me wrong, the jury’s still out, but I’ll wait a little longer before I make the official decision,” she responded, smirking.

He started laughing, and it was the same perfect sound he’d made earlier.

Chapter 13 - Callum

Callum was gripping the steering wheel so tight he could feel the leather crunch under his grip. He had just invited her to see a band, and…

She.

Said.

Yes.

That was not how it was supposed to go.

It was supposed to go something like this: do the three-legged race and piss her off (not have to hide the raging erection that came after he’d landed on top of her), say stupid shit while they spoke that made her mad (not almost stop breathing as she brushed her fingers across the skin of his tattoo), and then leave her sitting alone and frustrated (not ask her to meet up with him to hear a band).

He had royally fucked up.

Now he would have to spend the next hour acting like he wasn’t about to burst at the fucking seams. He watched as she circled the lot a few times in her rather expensive Mercedes-Benz and he wanted to throw up even more. She came from the same circles as he did. Normally, that would make someone more compatible. But after the life he led, he knew they would benothing but an absolute disaster together. She most likely came from money and perfectly polished parents who would faint at the idea of their perfect pre-med daughter being seen with a tattoo-covered disappointment.

He pushed those thoughts from his head.

They weren’t there as a couple.

This was not a date.

They were just going to see a band.

He repeated those three phrases over and over again in his head as walked to meet her at the entrance.

Chapter 14 - Sam

It was obvious that Callum knew a lot of people at Social; she had been introduced to at least ten people just trying to make their way through the door. The band was good. It wasn’t her kind of music. She was more of a Swifty, but it wasn't bad at all.

After about thirty minutes of standing and slowly being pushed further and further back, the place became packed and they ended up nearly pressed up next to each other. She tensed when the side of her arm brushed the side of his, but he didn’t seem to acknowledge the touch.

It took an immense amount of self-control to keep from constantly turning to look at him. Thankfully, he only caught her gaze a few times. She still blushed whenever his eyes met hers.

“I’m sorry for bringing up your brother the other day. I didn’t realize it was a sore subject and I’m sorry. I’m…I'm just sorry I upset you,” she said the apology so quickly she wasn’t exactly sure if he heard it all.

Callum smiled as he took another swig of his drink.

“It’s okay. It’s not really a sore subject. I don’t know. Maybe it is? We just don’t get along great and it’s just a big family drama situation you don’t want to hear about. But yeah, it’s okay. Sorry I just bolted when you brought it up.”Well, thank fuck. She washoping maybe he wouldn’t hate her forever for that. “And…I would like to say sorry about the thing with…Christian the other night, but I would be lying. I hate him, and he is never welcome on my property.” Callum forced out Christian’s name with the most obvious disdain.

She wasn’t really sure how to respond to that. There was definitely no malice in his words. Just straight facts.

“Why do you hate him so much?”

“I can’t talk about that now.”

Sam let out a frustrated breath. “Will you ever talk about it?”
