“No! Well, yes, but they were the Peanut butter M&M’s and everyone knows they’re the best kind. Plus, it was the last bag, and I’d driven thirty minutes to get it.”

“Sounds like a lousy reason, and who drives half an hour for a bag of candy.”

Okay, so August obviously doesn’t have his priorities straight, but I’m not going to go there right now.

“Come on, trust me. I can drive. I am a fantastic driver.”

“How about a compromise. At the next rest stop, you can take over?” he says.

“Ooh, so I can take us to the cabin, yeah?”

He smiles slightly at that, his eyes twinkling. Fuck, they’re bright when they do that.

“Yeah.”

“Perfect. I can do that. I canso do that. You’ll be impressed with how well I do it too.”

“Yeah, well, we’ll see. We’ll see.”

CHAPTERTWO

AUGUST

Ishould have never let him drive. But that kiss messed with my mind. I still don’t know why I did that. There is no logical explanation, except that Iwantedto do it. I used the ‘I need information about Emery’ line as an excuse. When in reality, I just really wanted to plant my mouth on his, to taste those candy-tinted lips. Watching him suck on that lollipop all day was disturbingly hot, and instead of analyzing it like I should have––because when have I ever been attracted to a guy?––I kissed him instead.

And from there, it all spiraled out of control. I let Emery drive my car, and now I don’t know where the fuck we are.

I trusted he could drive the last hour to the cabin, so I dozed off, and now we’re lost.

“What the hell, Emery?” I ask, looking around and feeling my stomach sink. This is likeInto the Wildshit. There is nothing around.

Nothing.

“Ah, yeah. I know. I um, quite possibly took a wrong turn.”

I glance around at the wide expanse of bare trees and the snow-covered hills. The sun is slowly going down, and I know that pretty soon, it’s going to be dark. Like pitch dark.

“You took a wrong…Emery, this isn’t even a road. I think this is a fire trail for emergency vehicles.”

“Yeah, I guessed that a while ago, but I’m not a quitter. I figured it had to come out somewhere on the other side.”

“Emery,” I groan. I keep saying his name, but damn. What the fuck was he thinking? Apparently, he wasn’t. Does this guy ever think things through? “You need to turn us around. We can’t be on this road when it gets dark. We won’t be able to see where we’re going.”

He sighs, “Well, I already tried to turn around, and bad news, bro. We’re stuck. In a ditch of sorts.”

“I’m sorry, we're what?”

“Stuck. Like really stuck. I think we need a tow. See how we’re kind of slanted. I kind of slipped the car off the road. Just a bit. But I swear, it was not candy-related.”

“Jesus,” I say rubbing my fingers into my eyes. I take a deep breath and hop out of the car. I jog through the ankle-deep snow and slip a little before reaching the driver’s side door.

“Let me try. Move over.”

Emery scrambles over the center console and then stares at me as I try in vain to move us back down the road. The tires just spin and skid and we stay firmly planted where we are.

“We are, huh? Stuck, I mean,” Emery says, worrying his bottom lip and looking at me with those expressive brown eyes.

Fuck, I shouldn’t have let him drive, but I was a little helpless at the time. He was tugging at my heartstrings. For a few hours, I was really starting to like the guy.
