“Hi, hon,” she says and pulls me into her arms. “So good to see you again.” Then she lowers her voice and softly says, “He’s so happy,” and I melt a little.

Because yeah, I think he is.

“Alright, enough of this,” Luke announces, coming around the corner, with a large box cradled in his arms. “I’ve waited all day for you to get here, Sem. You took your sweet ass time. Ready to go blow shit up?”

Whit sighs heavily next to Caleb, who is leaning against his chest. “You are not going with them,” he mutters, and Caleb turns his head and presses his lips to Whit’s.

“Come on, babe. We've already discussed this. Live a little.”

“I live plenty with you and die a little each time you come home hurt.”

Caleb’s eyes turn to mush, and he nuzzles into Whit’s neck. “Babe. I’ll be fine. I promise. It’ll be fun. These are the illegal kind, everyone knows they’re the best.”

“And that’s supposed to inspire confidence?” Whit mutters.

I bite back a giggle and look at Sem whose head is bent, shuffling through the box in Luke’s arms. “This all you bought? That’s not enough, man.”

Whit huffs and grumbles, “It looks like plenty to me.”

“Fuck no. Do you have any faith in me?” Luke says. “I have an entire truck’s worth. We have probably enough for a few hours. Unless the cops come. Then we’ll have to finish off the rest tomorrow.”

“Oh my god,” Whit breathes, and I have to lock my knees to stop myself from rolling.

Liam slaps Sem on the back as he strides around them. “Let’s go, assholes! No time to waste. The night is still young. I’ll drive with you, baby bro.”

Luke jogs after Liam as they make their way down the driveway toward an idling truck. As I squint in the fading evening light, I can see it piled high with fireworks.

“Be safe,” Anne calls to her retreating husband and then disappears back into the house with Del.

Sem turns to me, grabbing onto the back of my neck and squeezing lightly.

I glance up at him, and he brushes a knuckle against my cheek. “Ready to go?”

I bite my bottom lip and nod, tucking my hand into Sem’s and walking with him toward the garage on the other end of the property.

“What’s in here?” I ask.

“The ATVs. We’ll take those out there. Gotta get far enough away from the house. Ma almost killed us last time a projectile blew out a window.”

“That did not really happen,” I gasp.

“Yeah, it did. She was pissed.”

Footsteps approach from behind, and I can hear Whit saying to Caleb, “You’re not driving. I am.”

I tilt my head toward Sem and ask, “Can I drive?”

“If you want.”

“Oh, I so want.”

“You know how?”

“No, but I am very teachable.”

Sem and I approach the garage, and he leans down and pulls the metal door open. It rolls up with a clash, and then Sem pulls a set of keys from the wall, tossing a pair to Caleb.

“Race you there,” Sem tells Caleb, who chuckles and slides onto the back of an ATV.
