She sniffled. “It is, but you love it. Storm and the others are your family. You would give your life for them… and for me.”
“That’s a little hard to believe.” I only remembered caring about myself and no one else.
“It’s the truth, I promise.”
“Yeah, okay. Just don’t lie to me or hide shit, all right?”
She bobbed her head. “You can trust me.”
Yeah, we’ll see about that.“So we worked out together in a gym?” I’d noticed I was a bulky son of a bitch, with muscles everywhere. The Terminator would be impressed. My old man might be, too, not that I cared what he thought of me.
I studied Ava’s perfect body. From what I could tell, she was fit and trim underneath her clothes. She sure was a beauty and sexy as hell, even in loose-fitting clothes.
“Mhmm. You’d been training me in self-defense since last fall.” She wrapped her arms around her middle like she was protecting herself.
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“So what am I? A gym rat? An athletic trainer?” Either would be cool. I never imagined I’d amount to anything. My parents sure as hell never thought I would. After my mom died, my old man made sure I didn’t have time for any activities or fun.
“Kinda. During the day, you manage the place with Boxer when you aren’t doing club business. In your free time, you’re usually with me several times a week.”
I raised a curious brow. “Are we having sex?”
She stiffened, sitting taller, and swallowed. “Yes.”
I grinned when my cock perked up under the blanket. Damn, I wished I remembered what it was like getting dirty with this gorgeous woman. Maybe she’d like to give sex a whirl to see if it would help me get my memory back.
“You should really get some rest.” She was off the bed in a snap. “I need to check on my nana anyway.”
What the hell just happened?
“I’ll be back in a couple of hours. I mean, if you want.”
“Ava, what’s going on? Did I do something to upset you?” I knew I had, but I didn’t know what.
She smiled, but again, it wasn’t genuine. “Patch said you needed to rest. If you want to get your memory back, you need to let your brain heal.” She reached for the doorknob.
“Wait.”
She turned around. “Yeah?”
I reached my hand out. “Come here.”
Panic flashed on her face.
What was going on with her? If she loved me and wanted me to remember her, why the hesitation, or was it…fear?“I won’t hurt you. You should know that if you’re my girl.”
“You don’t remember how we were together. You’re not acting likemyDrew.”
“Come here.” I gestured with my hand.
“What? Just get some rest. I’ll be back.” She opened the door.
“Ava.” I raised my voice out of frustration. I didn’t like how she was ready to bolt when all I was trying to do was get to know her. “Come. Here.”
She kept her back toward me. “No, Drew. You’re making me uncomfortable. I’ll be back.” She rushed out of the room and closed the door.
