“If you’re talking about sex, no problem.”
Wow, that response knocked my ego down a dozen pegs. I shouldn’t be insulted. I was the one drawing the line. Still, the way he’d been staring at me, I thought, just maybe, he desired me.
“Good, you aren’t my type,” I said flippantly.
“You’re not my type either,” he shot back.
“Why not? Too full-figured for you?” Dear God, why did I say that? My stupid insecurities were rising to the surface. They shouldn’t. There were a lot of men who desired me… I meant, desired Dolly. With my clothes on, I was just plain old, single mom Jaynee.
Zander’s eyes darkened as he took a step closer to me. “No, not at all. I don’t mess around with single moms. Kids complicate things.”
“Ever?”
“Ever.”
“You just screw women, no commitments?” Of course a stupidly gorgeous man like him would be a manwhore. I should be relieved. I never messed around with guys like him.
“Exactly. Let’s get the others so we can find you a room. I need to get back home.”
“Where’s home?”Stop already, Jaynee. My curiosity was getting the better of me.
“A couple of hours west. Do you want to go there? It’s a small town with friendly locals.”
I shook my head. “No, we’ll be fine here.”Keep those boundaries in place. The sooner he’s gone, the better.
“Suit yourself.” He turned on his heel to go inside.
“Zander?” I called to him.
He stopped, then turned around. “Yeah?”
“Are you really just helping us? You won’t hurt Sadie and me?”
His jaw twitched as if insulted. “No, Jaynee, I’m not going to hurt you.” He shook his head and went inside.
Strangely, I believed him.
