“Phantom,” Reaper growled, then calmly added. “I want to know everything you have on Jeffery Denton.”

“Can you be more specific? My files are extremely in-depth. Are you wanting everything from birth to high school? Maybe his college days when he took up theater at UCLA? Or how about when he met his wife or his second wife.”

Growling, Reaper said, “Why was Ghost threatening him? Start there.”

“Oh, that. Well, I can’t tell you till tomorrow.”

And that was when Reaper lost it.

Ghost

Later that night, I was sitting out back on one of the picnic tables looking at the houses up on the hill in the distance when I heard someone walk over to me. I didn’t need to look. I knew who it was. I’d been expecting her.

The past had slithered into the present, and what was about to happen would blow this club-wide open. No one was ready for what was about to happen, least of all me, but at least I had a heads up. My brothers, not so much. Their anger and fury were going to be thunderous, to say the least, especially Reaper when he found out the truth.

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way, but there was nothing either of us could do about it now. All we could do is try to limit the carnage headed our way.

“How’s your back?” she asked, sitting next to me.

“It will heal.”

“Did you get the tracker out?”

“Yeah, Phantom is doing her techie thing.”

“I’m sorry you got caught up in this.”

“Better me than anyone else.”

“Still doesn’t make it right. I wish James would have taken care of these bastards before he died.”

“Why didn’t he?”

“I don’t know. Are you going to be able to follow through with everything?”

“Yep.”

“I am sorry, Balthazar.”

“I know, Caroline,” I said, handing her a manila folder. “Inside is everything you will need. Money too. I’ve called ahead, and Farmer and Doolittle will pick you and Becca up at the Silver Springs Airport. From there, you will be staying on their horse ranch. Their wife is Raina, a sweet woman, you’ll like her. Doolittle made arrangements with the local police and some of the ranchers. You and Becca will be safe there.”

“And nobody knows of this place?”

“No. It’s a really small fucking town that takes care of its own. Trust me, the people of Treasure Cove will take care of you and Becca.”

“Are you going to be okay without her here?”

“No, but I need her safe.”

“I’ll make sure of it.”

I looked at the woman who was at the center of all this and said, “You better, or I will be coming for you next.”

Caroline nodded and got to her feet.

“The car is packed, and Shadow already has Becca secured. The longer you stay, the harder it’s going to be to leave.”
