Her lips and chin began to tremble. “It’s too late.”

I grabbed her and pulled her into my arms. If this was going to be my last few minutes on earth, I wanted them to be spent holding my female.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered brokenly as she shook in my arms.

“For what?” I asked. “For giving me an adventure? For giving me my first kiss? For wanting to get to know the real me?”

Her head tipped back to stare at me with bright and glossy eyes.

“No apologies, Poe. No one has given me what you have given me in a day. We will face what comes the way we started this-together.”

“Together,” she echoed.

Chapter Fifteen

*Poe*

We were going to dietogether. The Global Allegiance would terminate us both. They would terminate Dax for being a cyborg and me for harboring one. I only hoped they didn’t wait. If I was going to die, I wanted it to be wrapped in his arms. A hail of plasma fire would be better than watching them drag him away knowing they were going to torture him first before destroying him.

Wood shattered. I locked my eyes on Dax. I didn’t want my last image to be that of our murderers.

My last image would be of Dax.

It wouldalwaysbe Dax.

One second. Two seconds. I held my breath waiting for a hail of scorching plasma rounds to strike my flesh, but nothing came.

“Fuck. Looks like we got a situation here, boss,” a voice growled from the doorway.

The growl was met with a snarl. “It appears so.”

Holy blazes!I knew that voice. My eyes shot to the door and my jaw dropped.

”Reaper.” Dax said the name I hadn’t been able to get past my lips.

There in the doorway stood the massive Military Model I had last seen on the forest floor. Reaper showed no signs of damage though I didn’t expect him to. Dax might have deactivated him, but I didn’t believe that Dax would have done it if it would have caused lasting harm. Next to him stood a purple Technology Model.

Dax let go of me and I found myself gently pushed behind his frame as he put himself between me and the other cyborgs. Dax was making it clear that if they wanted me, they would have to go through him first. My inner thirteen girl wanted to swoon at the gesture.

His head dipped forward. “Reaper. Viper.“ Dax said their names formally and without a hint of fear, as if they hadn’t just launched a home invasion and busted through the bedroom’s door.

“Should I even ask how you found me?”

“Tracker.” Reaper spit out harshly. “Courtesy of Dr. Shaw.”
