I gaped. “A pregnancy test?” All of a sudden, I felt ganged up on. Like my friends were taking charge of my life like Bran used to do. In the past, I’d have raged at them and kicked them out, but right now, tears came. Dammit. Was it hormones making me emotional?

“Harper—”

I grabbed the box and stormed from the room not wanting their pity or whatever the hell they were thinking and feeling about me.

I went to the bathroom, ripping open the box and following the directions.

“Harper?” Anne’s voice came through the door.

I ignored her as I waited for the test results.

Neither Anne or Lane spoke, but I sensed they were outside the door. I really hoped I wasn’t pregnant so I could sneer at them for treating me like a baby. But even as I thought that, I put my hand over my belly somehow wishing a child was there.

I shook my head. No. The last thing I needed right now was a baby with a man who one minute said he wanted to date me and then the next day disappeared without a goodbye.

I checked the test and this time when my stomach dropped it wasn’t from nausea.

Pregnant.

Oh God.

I sucked in a breath, opened the door, and exited the bathroom without looking at my friends. I went to the kitchen to make myself something to eat.

After a moment my friends followed me.

“It’s going to be alright,” Anne said. “I’m sure Noel will do the right thing. He’s already proving he’s a good father.”

Lane made a face. “Even if he doesn’t, you have us.”

I stopped breaking eggs to glare at Lane. “What does that mean?”

Lane looked at Anne.

“Knock that off!”

They both flinched.

“If you want to continue your sistermance, do it somewhere else. I’m tired of the knowing looks about me.”

Anne’s expression was apologetic. “I’m sorry.”

“We’re just concerned,” Lane added.

“Why?”

“Come sit.”

God. It was news I needed to take sitting down.

“I’ll make your eggs.” Anne took over at the stove.

Deciding I couldn’t fight them any longer, I sat at the table.

“After running into that man yesterday, I told Archer about it, and he shared some information with me. Archer wouldn’t like me sharing this, but I think you need to know. Noel sent Dax to Mexico on some sort of secret mission that turned out to be about Mo’s mom.”

“I know they talk sometimes,” I said. Still, why did Noel send his best man down to find her? Did he want Dax to bring her back here? Did he want to work things out with her? If that was the case what was the other day about?

“Noel called Archer yesterday telling him that he’d heard from Dax. He wouldn’t give me details.”
