She’s got me at a disadvantage.

“Ahh, well. Enzo is my biggest critic. Don’t hold anything you’ve heard against me.”

Evie opens her mouth as if to say something, and then promptly closes it.

A new song starts, and I’m actually surprised it’s the first Sinatra of the night.

Some day.

Ol’ Blue Eyes’s voice fills the barn.

When I’m awfully low.

“What’s so funny?” she asks.

When the world is cold.

“My father. Enzo specifically told him the entire reception could not be one Sinatra song after another.”

I will feel a glow just thinking of you.

“What’s wrong with Sinatra?”

And the way you look tonight.

I can’t help but laugh out loud. Dad would love her on sight.

“Nothing, but the guy plays it pretty much nonstop. Even the best songs can get old after hearing them too many times.”

Yes, you’re lovely, with your smile so warm.

“Hmm. I don’t know about that. If I adore something, I never get sick of it.”

Gauntlet, thrown.

And your cheeks so soft.

“Dance with me?”

She clearly wasn’t expecting that.

There is nothing for me but to love you.

“Um,” she hesitates, “this is a little fast for me.” She wrinkles her nose. “I only slow dance,” she confesses. “No rhythm at all.”

Reaching for her wine glass, I don’t give her a chance to say no. I put the wine, and my beer, back onto the bar.

And the way you look tonight.

“I have enough for us both.”

I always thought going weak in the knees was just an expression. But when I grab her hand, I get it. Turns out, it’s not just an expression at all.

Lovely, never, never change.

“Tris?” She’s hesitant for the first time all night. When I watched her, Evie talked and laughed with all the confidence in the world. Like a woman comfortable in her skin, rightly so. But as we move onto the dance floor, she’s nervous.

“Trust me,” I tell her.
