As she watched Roland lapse back into sleep, Adelina hoped his promise would come true. However, he faced a long road ahead, even if a fever didn’t take hold.

“With your permission,” she said to his parents, “I would like to stay with him.”

“Of course,” Lady Hollis replied. “We’ll send word when the meal is ready to be served in the hall.”

Adelina took a risk. “I mean no disrespect, but I don’t intend to leave this chamber until I am assured he is recovering.”

The comte and comtesse exchanged a worried glance, but Becket spoke up. “Adelina is probably the best medicine for Roland. He’ll sense her presence. She loves him and they are betrothed. There’s no harm in it.”

Lady Hollis nodded. “I will make sure food is sent up for you, my dear.”

“And broth perhaps for Roland,” Adelina replied. “I’ll try to get him to eat when he wakes.”
