He picked her up, carried her in, and stepped into the tub.

“What are we doing?” she asked.

“We’re taking a bath.” He grinned when she snorted. “I just don’t want you to be sore later.”

“Okay.”

She relaxed back against him and closed her eyes.

He picked up the sponge and soap and started washing her from her neck.

“Are you mad at me?” she asked.

He shook her head. “No, baby. I was never mad.”

She glanced at him over her shoulder. “Really?”

“Really. I was sad you thought it would be better to leave instead of talking to me first.”

“We didn’t know what to do. We’re worried about all of this, and the fact we haven’t been able to leave the two condos for a few weeks now is hard. We don’t even get any fresh air unless we open a window and stick our heads out.”

“I know this is difficult for you, and I’m sorry that I have to tell you it’s going to be a bit longer. Nolan and I are considering bringing in a few women to visit to help with the monotony. What do you think?”

“They know about us?”

“Not all of them yet. One who does know is Lacey, and she knows about the situation. Now, her husband doesn’t let her be with Jones. She and her husband were the ones who started the organization to help arrest human traffickers and find as many victims as possible.

“I would hate to be in a room with him.”

Jonah pressed his lips to the back of her head. “You won’t ever have to if I have anything to say about it.”

His girl had been through enough. “Let’s get you out and dressed, and then I’ll feed you lunch.”

“I’d like that very much, Daddy.”

Chapter Twenty-Two

Several weeks passed, and nothing had happened with the investigation. They were still finding evidence against Detective Jones but had to be careful. One wrong move, and he could walk. They were also worried that if he found out he was being investigated, he’d cross the border, and then it would be next to impossible to find him.

It took way longer than she hoped it would because every day felt more like a prison than the last. She and Caylee had met a few littles, which helped tremendously to have something to look forward to.

Her relationship with Jonah seemed to be doing well, although he never talked about the future anymore, and Holly sometimes wondered if he regretted keeping her, but she was too afraid to ask.

It was past the time that Jonah was to be home. Caylee had gone back to her condo to start dinner, so she had no idea if Nolan had gotten home or not.

She decided to change into something more comfortable when she heard the elevator door open. Even though she was ready to call out, she glanced out of the doorway and saw a man she’d never seen before. Instead, she ducked back into the room and hurried to the safe room in the master bedroom.

After she locked the door, she turned on the lights and computers. The man looked like an average guy except by the way he moved as if he wanted to be silent.

Holly glanced around for a way to get in touch with Jonah but couldn’t figure anything out. He might have told her before, but she couldn’t remember. She prayed the man was gone by the time Jonah got home.

Her heart sank when the elevator door opened, and Jonah stepped out, looking down at his phone, distracted.

The man had ducked into the office and peered around the doorjamb, staring at Jonah.

She started to panic when the man pulled a gun from the back of his pants.

“Oh, God, no, no, no.” Holly scrambled around the small room, pulled out one of the small guns, and put the clip in it as Jonah had shown her. She was shaking so hard she just about dropped the gun, and she desperately wished they’d spent more time going over them. Jonah had been worried about her being around them and not knowing anything about them, so he had shown her what to do a few times and let her do it herself.
