His cellphone rang. He waved bye then answered.
“Asher will be joining in a few days.” I heard him say to someone on the other end.
Why would he say that? Why did he avoid my question about the red stilettos?
Chapter 32
AUGUST
Ihated lying to Imogen and I could tell that Gunner wasn’t buying my lies. A man like him would have already researched the family and known everything about all of us, right down to how many times a day I drank water. I was going to have to tell him, so he didn’t play into any suspicion Imogen has. She had already caught me a couple of times, but somehow my lies worked. How long ‘til they didn’t?
What’s with the red stilettos?
I dodged the question this time, but I needed to ask Asher. I had a lot of work to get done, but as myself, and it was already proving to be tough to get the stories straight.
And Asher is laying on a sunny beach, drink in hand, presumably with a woman he loves. Oh, he owes me.
I had made sure to stay chatting long enough to show I cared. I was itching to make the calls I needed to, but I needed her to be occupied so I could make the calls as myself. I let her know we’d go to dinner, and now my cell was ringing. I waved bye and headed to my side of the suite.
“Yes, Asher will be here in a few days,” I answered.
I spent the next twenty minutes on that same call, then disconnected. My head was still pounding. A hot shower started sounding like a great idea, but first I needed to text Asher to check in.
“How’s it going with you?”
“Not much going on. Been fishing and playing volleyball.”
“Sorry to hear you’re having such a rough time of it.”
“Okay, sarcasm. What’s going on with you and the fiancée?”
“You mean your fiancée?”
“Maybe.”
“Asher, no maybe. I said I’d be you for a week or two, then you get married.”
“Or three.”
“NO.”
“What’s the big deal? You’re traveling anyways. Give the girl some money and let her shop.”
“Not every girl wants to just shop.”
“Then she’s not a girl I would marry. I like to shop.”
“You like to buy, not shop.”
“Yeah, that too.”
“This is getting tricky.”
“So stay busy and away from her until you go out in public a few times.”
“Mother told her to take care of me…you… and be seen out a lot.”
“Oh hey, I forgot, Mom texted to make sure I got her an engagement ring.”
