After having breakfast in the tub, which was a first for Kate, they spent several hours binge-watching a show on Netflix. They made out on his couch like two horny teenagers, where he felt her up under the black T-shirt he gave her. He had her lusting over him even more because he wasn’t in a hurry to have sex again, or so it seemed, as he just played with her.

Hours passed and when things between them didn’t progress, she began thinking that maybe she’d overstayed her welcome. Because she was definitely on fire for him and he made no move to take things further. Maybe, now he had his way with her in his studio and bathroom, he was already done with her.

She looked back to gauge his mood. His eyes locked in on hers, with such fire behind his stare. He seemed to be warring with something, like he could barely hold back a certain emotion.

How do one-night-stands work? Does he want me to leave? Am I just too stupid to get his hints?

His silence did nothing for her insecurity. She knew she wasn’t experienced. She’d only been with John, and he’d slept around on her. Okay, she probably wouldn’t have been enough for him even if she had been a sex kitten with him—she knew this now. But for quite some time after their breakup, she questioned everything about her ability to keep her partner happy.

“I-is everything okay? Should I… go?

Kate swallowed and looked away when he narrowed his eyes at her. Great. Now she’d pissed him off. She twisted her body in an attempt to stand up from the couch. A feral growl escaped his throat as he grabbed her waist and hoisted her up on his lap.

His nostrils flared as he leaned in and his breath tickled her face. They were both silent, but his eyes spoke volumes. Her head was all over the place. He seemed mad at her. Did she screw up so badly?

“Stop it right now, cupcake. Your thoughts are written all over your face.”

“But—”

“No. Never doubt yourself around me, you hear?”

She blinked. Was he mad at her?

“How can you even ask me if this is okay? This…. Fuck, I’m going all wrong about this.”

His fingers started to caress her thighs—the same thighs she’d always hated. She wasn’t as lithe and agile as her sisters. No, she had strong, thick thighs. Her butt stood out like a more normal looking Kardashian butt.

He tipped her chin up with his knuckle and looked at her, really looked into her eyes.

“Oh, sweetheart. If you only knew what you do to me. If you only knew what you’re smiling face, these sweet little freckles—” He kissed the tip of her nose. “—and this amazing body are doing to me. Your eyes have been haunting me for months.”

She softly shook her head, but he held her chin in his strong hand. He closed the little space left between them and kissed her. What started as a sweet lock of lips, escalated quickly in a heated kiss. They both simultaneously grasped the back of the other’s head and intensified their kiss.

He groaned and pulled away from her. She opened her eyes and took her fill of a wild-looking Donovan. His hair was a mess and he looked down on her and gave her a lopsided grin. “I want you again, but I also like the idea of savoring you. I want to take our time to discover one another.”

“Oh… Ok. Uhm, I would like that too.” A sweet, soft kiss on her nose followed.

Mmm, she had no doubt in her mind that this was it. She’d fallen for him, and the intensity of his stare made her hopeful of his feelings for her. She wasn’t certain, but he’d seemed… happy? She smiled, thinking of this broody man as happy.

“Wow, your smile is just….” Donovan smiled in wonder at her.

She turned in his arms and rested on her knees on the edge of the couch. He groaned and let his hands slip down over her butt. Grabbing both cheeks, he pulled her against him.

“Stay with me tonight,” he whispered against her lips.

“I… I need to check up on Errin. She went home last night with some guy from the dojo, but while I’m there, I can pick up some clothes for tomorrow and come back to you?”

“I’m coming with you, cupcake. Whatever made you think I would let you go alone?”

She glanced over his shoulder when his stern look became too much for her to bear, but he clearly wasn’t having it. He placed his knuckle under her chin and brought her gaze back to his. Just when she was sure he would give her a lecture of some kind, he shook his head in disbelief.

“For you to think I would let you go around the city at night on your own in an Uber and just wait here for you to return is just….” He seemed irritated as he cleared his throat. Obviously, he wanted to say more on the subject but chose to refrain from lecturing her. “Okay, let’s go to your apartment. I guess it’s better to show you rather than tell you how much you mean to me.”

She wasn’t sure if he meant it, but she would take it. Being with Donovan shifted something inside of her. She still felt insecure about so many things and wasn’t quite convinced he would want to be with her for the long haul, but she intended to enjoy their time together for as long as it lasted.
