“I…”

Fortunately, the waitress came back with their food and set the plates in front of them.

“We’ll talk later,” he whispered to her.

She nodded.

It took a while to eat her food because it kept getting stuck in her throat, but she managed to eat the majority.

The men threw down some bills and helped the women out.

Hannah was dreading the talk she knew was coming because it might truly be their end, and she couldn’t blame him.

Chapter Seventeen

Cullen felt the tension in Hannah as they ate breakfast, but he couldn’t figure out what had caused it.

He expected to talk when they got back to the truck because they still had two hours to drive to get home.

“Is it okay if I sleep?” she asked.

He sighed. “Sure, baby. Let’s get you comfortable.”

After getting her situated in the back seat, he put his seatbelt on and pulled out after Rhys and Kiera.

He could tell when she fell asleep, and she stayed that way until they got to town.

Cullen called Rhys. “Should I take Hannah home with me, or does Kiera need her there?”

“Hold on.”

He heard the two of them talking, and then Rhys was back on.

“She said she’s okay staying alone with me, but I made her a promise that if she got uncomfortable, we’d get Hannah to our house.”

“Sounds good to me. I’ll call you later.” Cullen stuck his phone back into his pocket and then made the turn onto his street.

After he pulled into his driveway and turned off the truck, he leaned back in his seat and studied Hannah. She was so small that she could curl up in a ball and fit in the seat. It didn’t look comfortable to him, but women could contort their bodies more easily than men.

He slid his thumb over her cheek. “Hey, little bird. We’re home.”

Cullen grinned when she grumbled and then tried to swat his finger away. He said the one word that he knew would get her attention.

“Kitten.”

Hannah sat straight up and looked back and forth. “Where?”

He chuckled. “I’d like to talk about getting one for you. What do you think?”

A smile bloomed across her face and then fell.

He grunted. “It’s past time you and I had a come-to-Jesus meeting.”

Hannah didn’t look happy, but she did look resigned, and he could see a shadow of fear in her eyes.

He led her into the house and over to the sofa, where he sat and pulled her down into his lap. “Now talk.”

She sighed and glanced up at him before dropping her gaze. “I told you I was sick, right?”
