Sofia wasn’t about to risk it all just to find out.

As though Dylan knew she was thinking about him, he called.

“Hi Sofia. Do you have any plans for this weekend that I’m not aware of?”

“No. With Rosslyn back to work, and between gigs, I’m free. Was there something you’d like to do?”

“Yes.”

She waited for him to say more, but he didn’t. “Well that’s not much to go on. Should we play the game twenty questions?”

“No.”

Again, the one-word answers. Well, it wasn’t her birthday, so that wasn’t it. And no holiday either. She had no clue what he was up to.

“Dylan, I really don’t like surprises, so why don’t you just tell me what’s going on?”

He laughed. “You don’t like them, but you sure like to do it to me all the time.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” That wasn’t true. She liked making special meals for him or having candles and a bubble bath waiting for them with strawberries and champagne. He did romantic things too, but usually told her. So why was he holding back now?

“Sofia, I’m not telling you anything,” he said firmly.

“I’m not sure I like this,” Sofia said.

“You’re just going to have to wait. And nothing you say is going to get me to spill it.”

So you think. I have my ways. She’d turn up the charm tonight and see if he caved. The playfulness was just the distraction she needed to break up her deep thoughts. But it also made her want to beat him to the punch. I wonder if assless leather chaps, some nipple pasties, and a whip would do the trick? Even thinking about her dressed like that brought her to tears of laughter. She’d let him have this one, but the next, is all hers.

Dylan knew it was cruel, but he knew Sofia would be going crazy trying to figure out what he had planned. What she never would’ve guessed was who his ally was. Charlene had proven to be invaluable when it came to pulling it all together. Of course, working with her was a different story. Charlene was a lot more high-strung than Dylan could deal with for long periods of time. But if it meant surprising Sofia, then he’d suffer through it.

He picked up the phone and called to confirm everything was going as planned.

“Please don’t tell me you’re checking up on me again?” Charlene said.

Someone’s got to.“I just got off the phone with Sofia. She has no clue.”

“Of course not. I spoke to her for more than an hour and didn’t even drop one hint.”

With how much Charlene talked, he was surprised by that. “Good. I’m picking her up for dinner tonight as usual.”

“So I heard from Sofia.”

“I’m counting on you, Charlene.”

“I might be a blonde, but I’m very capable of following instructions, so quit hounding me like I’m stupid.”

“Sorry. This is just very important to me.”

“Gee, I can’t tell. But if you don’t relax, she’s going to figure it out.”

“No way.”

“You’re not giving her enough credit. Even as kids, if she wanted to know something, nothing stopped her from finding the answer. So I hope you didn’t give her a reason to go looking.”

Fuck!“You would think you’d give me that kind of info up front.”

Charlene laughed. “Dylan, when I tried warning you, I believe you said you had everything under control.”
