“Do you want to tell her no?” Sal asked. Dylan shook his head. “Good, because I sure in hell wasn’t going to do it for you. She’s one of those Italian women who like to, no have to, feed you. And if you’re smart, you eat it, no questions.”

“You’re sister kind of gave me that speech last night.”

“Sofia?”

“You only have one right?” Dylan asked.

“Yes. I didn’t realize you two were…talking,” Sal said with a questioning look on his face.

Dylan had to remember that Sal was a cop and it was his job to read people. “She was our waitress last night. When all the commotion broke out, she had the same deer in the headlight look that I did.”

Sal said, “I’m glad I missed it. I can’t believe my mother didn’t make Sofia stay there and help.”

“We all wanted to help, but from a distance. Besides, your mother had everything under control.”

“She always does. I’d be the best cop in town if I had my mother’s sense of things. I heard she even knew when the baby was going to be born. Scary, isn’t it?”

“Bet you never got away with anything when you were growing up,” Dylan teased.

“Ha. I can’t now either. That’s why I stop in only once a week. Sofia is an angel for putting up with it all these years. I couldn’t do it. Hell, I’m not even sure she wants to.” Sal looked around and said, “Speaking of Sofia, I wonder where she is?”

There was a different waitress there. “Maybe it’s her night off.”

“She doesn’t have one.” Sal called the girl over. “Emily, where’s my sister?”

“Oh, we switched shifts. She’s working the morning shift and I have the nights. Can I get you guys anything?”

They put in their orders and Emily left. Dylan wasn’t sure he was glad he’d missed Sofia or not. She definitely added something extra to the place and tonight, even though the food was great, it was lacking Sofia’s charm.
