Chapter 6

Finn

I was looking forward to seeing Reesa again. She’d given me her cell number and I confirmed via text that we were still on for dinner. I don’t know why, but I had a feeling that something would come up to change these plans. But as I pulled into the hotel parking lot, that feeling dissipated. I could see her standing on the balcony, wearing a white dress that hugged every curve. Her long, dark hair framed her beautiful face.

Stunning.

When our eyes made contact, she smiled and gave me a wave before going inside. I turned off the engine and opened the door to find Logan walking across the parking lot towards me. Normally I would be grateful for any private conversation I could have with him. He was…brilliant. Right now, he was also the one delaying me from what promised to be a lovely evening.

“Dr. O’Connor, can we speak for a minute?” he asked.

The look on his face said I wasn’t going to like what he had to say. “Please call me Finn, and if you’re here to talk to me about the job, it’ll have to wait. Reesa and I are going to dinner.”

“That’s why I’m here. I promised her brother I’d take care of her. That’s why I’m coming to dinner with you,” he said.

Although Logan held sway in the medical world, I wasn’t turning over control of my personal life to him. “I appreciate you wanting to ensure her safety. There’s no need to worry while she’s out with me. Besides, you had no trouble leaving her at the restaurant with me last night. What’s changed?”

“That was different.”

“How?” I asked, very interested in what his answer would be.

“That was business, this is…”

“A date. And usually that involves two people, not three.” Meeting his gaze I asked, “Is there a reason she can’t date?” I had assumed she was single because there was no ring on her finger. Logan was acting overprotective, but not jealous, so I didn’t think they were intimately involved.

“Reesa…she’s here for one purpose only: to find the right person to take over for me at the hospital in Tabiq. A date could distract her, cloud her judgement, and then she’d hire someone who might not be the correct person for the position,” Logan stated.

“I never even said I was interested, if that’s what you’re worried about,” I said.

“In a way, I am.”

“You make no sense,” I replied. “I have a job here in Ireland, with no intention of leaving it. As far as I’m aware, Reesa is single and free to date. If there is something incorrect in either one of those statements, let me know. Otherwise, my date is waiting for me.”

“Do you plan on telling Reesa that you’re not taking the job?” he asked.

“If it comes up during dinner, I’ll answer her honestly. If not, then we will discuss it when we talk business. Is that okay with you?” I asked sarcastically.

Logan didn’t even acknowledge it. “You do not understand the gravity of the situation.”

“In taking Reesa out for dinner? The worst thing that happens is the meal sucks. Besides that, I can’t foresee any issues,” I replied.

Never before had I gone through such effort for a dinner date. If it were anyone else, I’d already be back in my car and pulling away. No woman was worth this hassle. Or at least no woman I’d met before.

“Then you are not thinking about tomorrow, which is why I am concerned. Reesa has a lot on her shoulders. She doesn’t need someone playing with her heart on top of everything else.”

“You do understand that this is just a dinner. It’s not like I’ve invited her for a weekend getaway.” Though I can picture waking up beside her.

“I have known her for more than a year. Never once have I seen her put on lipstick,” Logan said.

I laughed. “Has anyone ever told you you’re wound too tight?”

This time Logan laughed. “For your information, in my family, I’m one of the more easy-going ones. You should meet my brothers.”

“I think one Henderson is enough for me, thanks. Now, if you are done playing babysitter to a grown woman, I’m getting hungry, and I’m sure Reesa is too,” I said.

Logan looked at me long and hard, but stepped aside. “I guess I won’t bother telling you to have her home early.”

I was about to tell him to fuck off, but I noticed he was grinning. Maybe you’re not the controlling ass you’re pretending to be.
