Right now I had the upper-hand. He had no idea I was really working for the Hendersons.

“I need you to come up with a reason why we can’t fly out today,” I said.

“Don’t want to know why he’s sending you back?” Burke asked.

“Nope. I want to continue with the mission.” Hell hath no fury like awoman scorned, Jasper. It’s not going to be good for you.

“He’s no fool, LaHouse. Jasper could always book a commercial flight if we tell him no.”

That was true. It needed to be something that would keep me off a plane. Like a doctor’s note. “I need you to call Logan.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m not well enough for a long flight like that. Too risky right after surgery,” I said.

“Did Logan tell you that?” he asked.

“No. But that’s what you’re going to tell him to say. We might not get the entire twelve weeks like you wanted, but we might be able to convince Jasper to let me stay another week.”

“You know, that might actually work,” James said with relief. “Good to have you back, LaHouse.”

Nothing about it felt good. I was going against what my heart said and back to the lies. This is not about what I want. It’s what is best for Tabiq.

I didn’t bother taking the earpiece out. There was no point. Burke might as well hear what was going on between me and Jasper, which was going to be nothing.

It would take a little time for Burke to put the new plan into motion. Rolling over, I pulled the sheets back up and closed my eyes. I was in no rush to face Jasper this morning. As I breathed in deeply, his scent still lingered on the sheets.

I sure as hell hope you’re not lying to me about everything, Jasper. It hurt because I had been ready to defend him to the end. Now I wasn’t sure what to do. And that’s why I needed more time to figure it out.
