It was time I set some guidelines for Jasper. Holding my head up high and staring him directly in the eyes I said, “I am not taking my clothes off with you here.”

He smiled down at me and said, “Stubborn, aren’t you?”

Damn straight I am. And lethal too if you’re not careful.

Jasper raised his hand and tipped my chin up even higher. As he leaned over, I thought he was about to kiss me. I urged my hands up to push him away, but they didn’t move. His lips didn’t make contact with mine. Instead, he placed a kiss on my forehead.

His eyes never left me, and when he stepped back, he said, “I’ll be right down the hall. Just call out my name and I’ll be right here, understood?”

I nodded, not trusting my voice not to shake. And even as I watched him leave my room, I was filled with anger. Mostly at myself for yearning for more. Damn hormones.

Burke’s voice snapped me out of it as I heard him ask, “What the hell was that all about?”

Softly I said, “I don’t know.” There were mixed signals coming from Jasper and I don’t think I was clear headed enough to read any of them right now. This is what they warn you about happening when you get to close to mission. You risk making mistakes. Kissing him would be a major one.

“Are you sure you want to stay there?” he asked.

Yes. No. I’m not sure.“There’s only eleven weeks left till the election. It’s now or never.”

“If things start to get out of hand, I want you out of there.”

“Roger that,” I said, and took my earpiece out. I had no plans on calling Jasper’s name tonight. I’m sure he has Reesa to keep him occupied.

I wished that didn’t bother me, but somehow it did.

Maybe I’m not the right one for this mission after all.
