I had no idea if he could hear me, but it made me feel better. When I saw that demon again, I was going to get his cell phone number.

When we arrived back at the car, I was surprised that it actually started. That jolt of demon lightning had given it a good burst of life. I pulled out my cell phone as Xander drove us toward Federal Boulevard.

“You have a phone on you?” I asked.

He shook his head. “I don’t carry a cell phone.”

“Of course not,” I said. “You have the pack thing going for you.”

“When you’re ready, and we complete our bond, you and me will be able to communicate more easily.”

My heart raced.Complete our bond.Between my libido screaming at me and the fact that I might be able to shift, fucking Xander was sounding better by the minute.

I was surprised how patient he was being. Though, I supposed we hadn’t had much time to get it on with demons chasing us and battling vampires. It was like the supernatural world was plotting against me getting laid.

I hoped the photos of the spell were enough for Elias to work with and we could be finished with this whole mess. Time in Xander’s bed was just what I’d need to recover from this hell. Orgasms had a way of making everything seem like it was going to be okay.

The taco truck was in its usual spot, complete with the usual crowd. I’d never stopped to grab tacos here, but the mass of people who were always around made me think it had to be good. Despite the stress we were under, a couple of tacos sounded pretty great right now.

Xander kept the car running and I walked over to the window to get us a few of whatever today’s special was. I didn’t even care. I was so hungry I’d eat anything. If the smell from the kitchen inside the truck was any indication, we were in for a treat.

I took our bounty and got back in the car. My spirits lifted a little at the normal transaction of getting food and getting back into a car without incident. Xander and I ate tacos while we drove back to the mortuary and I can now say without doubt that I will be stopping at that truck every time from now on. They were perfect tacos. Dream tacos. Okay, I was also starving, but I’m pretty sure they’d be that good no matter what.

Fed and no longer running for our lives, well, at least for the moment, I relaxed a little.

Xander parked the car in a quiet area past the mortuary. We could see the building in case Elias showed up, but we were in our car in case we needed to leave fast.

He turned off the engine. “I feel like we’re in a stakeout in a cop movie.”

I laughed. “Except we already ate all our stakeout food.”

“True,” he agreed. “Good call on the tacos.”

It felt strange to be having small talk amidst the ongoing crisis. Our safe house was surrounded by vampires, we had hunters after us, and the enforcers were against us. Nothing about our odds were good right now.

Maybe that’s why I took off my seatbelt and climbed on top of Xander.
