Marigold was still stiff in his arms, while Trey was looking very smug. He seemed to be enjoying making someone upset. Darren turned Marigold with him and walked her away, putting her glass on a nearby table.
“Don’t give him a chance to make a scene. It’s what he wants.”
“I’d happily give him a scene.” Marigold was shaking. “To think he thought it was okay to come up to me and start saying I missed out an opportunity to walk into this party on his arm because I overreacted. The bastard!”
Darren didn’t know what to say to that. Tucking Marigold into his side, he led her over to Jake and Nathan, who were watching them in silence. Darren turned to Nathan.
“Can you give Marigold a ride back to her place, Nathan? Maybe we should cut this party short.”
“Of course.” Nathan paused. “Are you going with her as well?”
Darren didn’t answer. His friend would already know what he was going to say. There was no way he was leaving Marigold on her own tonight.
