Chapter 5
HUNTER
“I’m not saying anythinguntil I have a lawyer.” I clenched my teeth hard. The fucking asshole planted cameras in Charley’s apartment and terrorized her for years and I’m the one that’s getting fucking arrested.
“We are holding Mr. Gates so we can figure this all out.”
“Make sure you get his computer and search his apartment for panties that don’t belong to him.”
“I called in to get the warrant signed. We will also need to speak with your friend, but why didn’t you just call the cops in the first place?”
I looked down at his left hand and saw the gold wedding band circling his finger. “Let me ask you this: what if he had planted cameras in your wife’s apartment? What if he scared her for years before you met her? What if he had been in her apartment without her knowledge or invitation? What if her panties had gone missing from her drawers? What would you do, Officer Maddox?”
I saw his jaw clench, and anger flash in his eyes as he imagined what he would do if it had been his wife. I know in my gut that he would have done what I did, or worse. “I’ll wait for my lawyer,” I muttered again.
It was another hour before Martin got to me at the station, and he wasn’t alone. Our boss, Damian Savage, came walking in the interrogation room with a beautiful brunette that wasn’t his wife and who looked to be a few months pregnant.
Officer Maddox stood up with an irritated look on his face. “You’ve got to be kidding me?”
Damian shrugged and grinned. “You’re holding my employee.”
“He hit someone and threatened to beat the hell out of him.”
“Allegedly, Maddox.” Damian shrugged.
“Officer Maddox, if you could leave the room so I could speak privately with my client, please.” The lawyer stated, and the officer glared at both of them before leaving the room.
“I think you’re going to be in trouble later, Lex.”
The lawyer laughed and moved to the table in front of me. Her smile was wide, and her voice was raspy—sexy. “I’m Lexi Maddox.”
“Maddox, as in Officer Maddox?” I already knew the answer to the question but asked just the same. His annoyance when she walked in with Damian now made sense.
“My husband. Now, why don’t you tell me what happened?”
“I was helping my friend move his sister into her new apartment. We got to talking, and his sister informed me of the real reason she was moving and that she was afraid of the landlord. When Martin and I went back to the old apartment after we dropped his sister and the first round of boxes off at the new place, I checked the smoke detector and the thermostat where I found the recording devices.”
“Jesus,” Lexi murmured.
“Yeah. So, I went to see the slimeball and hit him. I wanted anything he had of hers. Someone walked in when I had the bastard by the shirt and called the cops. I made sure he didn’t move from that spot until the cops got there because I didn’t want him destroying evidence. I told them what was going on and they arrested us both.”
“You only hit him once?”
“Yes.”
“They’re going to want to pull your girlfriend in for questioning.”
“I know. They need to, so they can bring charges against that pervert.”
“I have a friend who’s a DA. If your story checks out, I’m sure we can get the criminal charges dropped to a misdemeanor. He will not try his hand with a jury if he knows the whole story because the charges would get thrown out by a jury, anyway.”
“When can I get out of here?”
