We took her bed apart quickly and quietly, a mix of anger and frustration fueling each of us. It pissed Martin off I wouldn’t tell him what I knew, but I wouldn’t break Charley’s trust. The things I wanted from her required her trust.
“You were right.” Martin said, as we finally loaded the last of the furniture into our trucks.
“About what?”
“You aren’t who I want to kill right now.”
Chapter 4
CHARLEY
Martin showed backup at the apartment with steaks, but without Hunter. He was also furious, and my stomach sank. Hunter must have told him what I’d been hiding.
“You got something to tell me, Charley?”
“No. Where’s Hunter?”
“He said he would be here soon.”
“Oh, okay.” I gave my brother a big smile and went back to unpacking the kitchen so I could actually make dinner for the guys.
“Charley, you need to talk to me now.”
I gave him a confused look, but I already knew what he was talking about. “It doesn’t matter. I moved.”
“It does fucking matter, and why didn’t you tell me?”
I felt betrayed by Hunter. He promised he wouldn’t tell Martin because Martin would end up doing something stupid, but he’d waited until they were alone and ratted me out.
“He wasn’t supposed to tell you.”
Martin’s face went all blotchy and red. “He didn’t say a word about it, Charley. He went into your old apartment and found the cameras and told me to talk to you!”
I felt my stomach bottom out. “Cameras?” I asked hoarsely.
“Cameras, Charley. One was in your smoke detector and the other in your thermostat.”
