The kid gave me a tight but genuine smile. “I hope you’re right.”

So did I. I should have felt triumphant as we made our way out onto the sun-lit street, but tension stayed coiled tight inside me.

Gideon was checking his tablet. As we reached the cars and got in, he smiled. “I’m already seeing the Storm men driving off. They’re not wasting any time now that the big boss has laid down the law.”

Somehow that didn’t relieve me as much as I would have expected it to either. “All of them?” I asked.

“I mean, some of them must have things to sort out first, but it’s a good sign that any of them are already getting out of town.”

Beckett stared out the window. After several minutes of silence, he let out a rough chuckle. “I’m starving.”

Wylder laughed and relaxed into the driver’s seat. “Let’s put a little distance between us and your dad and then see if we can’t—”

Gideon’s curse cut him off. Wylder’s head jerked around, and my pulse lurched. “What?” I asked.

Gideon looked up at us, his mouth tightening. “The Storm’s men are continuing to head out of the county… but not Xavier. I’ve just caught him on a street cam. He’s going totally crazy—rampaging through Paradise City, taking shots all along Main Street. The rest of the Storm’s people might be willing to listen to orders, but it looks like he’s a different story.”

My heart sank. The war wasn’t over yet.
