Isure as hell hadn’t brought it into the apartment. So who had? How had they even gotten in here? And why had they wanted to get me arrested?

The apartment had never really felt like a home, but now the walls around me didn’t offer the slightest sense of security. An enemy had breached them, and I hadn’t even realized until it was almost too late.

If I lingered any longer in the bathroom, the cops would get suspicious. I emptied the drugs into the toilet and flushed them away along with my piss. Then I folded the baggie as small as it’d go and squeezed it behind the window frame. Even if they checked the bathroom again after I came out, they weren’t going to find anything.

I washed my hands and walked back out to find Tall Guy shaking his head at Shortie. “—a bad tip,” he was just saying. He shut his mouth at the sight of me.

Shortie glared at me as if blaming me for wasting their time, when they were the ones who’d gotten me up at two in the morning. “It seems everything’s in order here after all, Miss Katz. If you have any reason for concern, I’m sure you’ll notify the PBPD.”

“Absolutely,” I said with forced brightness that I doubted they believed.

They marched out, and I shut the door firmly behind them, pushing the deadbolt into place. But the thunk of the heavy metal lock didn’t reassure me as much as it used to. Someone had gotten past it once already.

At least once. How many times had the intruder come in here before? Planting the drugs might not have been the first time.

The thought made my skin crawl. I glanced toward the bedroom, but my nerves were too jittery for me to get back to sleep. Something was very, very wrong here.

And if they’d come for me, who else might they be coming for?

I grabbed my phone, taking a small bit of satisfaction in knowing that now I wouldn’t be alone in getting woken up to bad news in the middle of the night.

Wylder picked up his new burner phone after a few rings, his voice tired but tense. “What’s going on?” he asked without preamble.

I swallowed thickly, resisting the urge to hug myself even though he couldn’t see me anyway. “We’ve got another problem.”
