“She wouldn’t say. I do wonder though if…” Vance shook his head. “Never mind.”
Well now Arthur was wondering too what the hell that had to do with anything, but Vance was ready to move on.
“I’m glad to hear Saoirse’s getting better, and I’m happy you’re happy. It’s been a while. Wasn’t sure if you’d ever be serious with someone again.”
“You and me both,” Arthur said. “But I don’t imagine that’s why you wanted to chat. What’s up?”
Vance pulled a face. “Uh, I would absolutely call you solely to settle a bet.”
Arthur snorted. “Under normal circumstances I don’t doubt that but these are not normal circumstances. I know you wouldn’t claim my time unless it was important. And as seriously as you and Nikki take your wagers, I know this doesn’t count. So spill.”
“Fine, fine. I won’t dissuade you from thinking I’m a considerate and responsible person. It’s about the Sawyer case.”
“Right,” Arthur said, as he pulled up the file on his laptop and stole a glance at the monitor. His sweet little girl was fast asleep.
