He stood there, watching me unlock the door, and a part of me wondered if he had plans of guarding the hallways from dragons, since he obviously saw himself as something of a white knight. In my mind, Santi would always be a cruel, cruel prince.

“Make sure to lock it behind you,” he said.

I closed the door softly, and just to mess with him, I didn’t lock it immediately. Instead, I peered at him through the peephole, covering my mouth so he couldn’t hear me laughing at him practically yanking his hair out in frustration.

“Damn it, Maeve. Lock the fucking door,” he growled, leaning his hand against it.

I pressed my hand to the same spot on my side, letting my laughter bubble up. “Oh, I can’t believe I forgot.” In slow motion, I twisted the deadbolt. “I’m all locked up now.”

His head dipped for a moment, and even through the door, I could hear his sigh. “Thank you. Goodnight.”

“‘Night, Santiago.”

He finally left, and I went into the living room where Yael had a smile on her face. “Are you torturing that poor guy?”

I flopped down beside her. “Just a little.”

“Good. I’m sure he deserves it. They all do.”

“Oh...did four a.m. prepster do you dirty?”

She covered her eyes with her hands, groaning. “Iwishhe did me dirty. He had a major case of whiskey dick. I mean, he got hard, but it went on forever. After a while, it was like he was trying to saw through my vagina. He finally got off, kissed my nose, and called me by the wrong name. So...yeah. Men are trash.”

“You came to that conclusion from one bad lay?”

“Oh, girl, no. It’s years of bad lays. It’s my own damn fault. Stupid penchant for douchey-looking country club types.” She nudged me with her toe. “How was dinner, by the way? Sorry I flaked.”

“Dinner was nice. Santiago’s dad was a little scary, but I won him over. I would’ve brought you a piece of pie, but I’m annoyed you ditched me and the boys ate it all.”

“God, I know, I’m the worst. My stomach is still roiling if it’s any consolation.”

“Aw.” I laid my head on her shoulder. “I don’t want you miserable, just maybe mildly uncomfortable.”

She kissed my hair and sighed. “I’m glad you’re here, babe.”

“You know, I really am too.”
