I’d spent an evening doing a whole lot of nothing when Adelaide texted at midnight.

Baddie:I’m home. Just thought you should know I managed not to get murdered in a ditch.

Me:How many murders do you think take place in a ditch? You’d obviously be murdered somewhere else before being dumped in the ditch.

Baddie:I think you meant, “I’m glad you’re home, Adelaide. I hope you had a lovely evening. I cried until my eyes were swollen shut because I was such a monster to you. Will you ever forgive me?” That’s what you meant, right?

Me:Come over.

Baddie:No, I’m tired.

I tossed my phone down, opened my door, and knocked on hers. She answered less than a minute later, all scrubbed up and in her pajamas. Baddie didn’t wear skimpy pj’s either. She was all raggedy T-shirts and men’s flannel pants. Plus slippers. It made me like her more.

“I had to see for myself you weren’t dead and Simon wasn’t impersonating you on your phone,” I explained.

“It’s me, alive and in the flesh.” She leaned her head against the door, clearly not planning on inviting me in. “Although, what if he was here right now? That would be awkward.”

I tried to peer around her, but I couldn’t see much from this vantage. “Is he?”

She huffed and shoved at my chest. “No, he’s not. Go back to your apartment.”

Returning my attention to her, I looked her over. “Did you have a nice time?”

Both shoulders went up. “It was fine. He’s sweet. We’re doing something this weekend. There was a thing he did that bothered me, but I’m working on not being shallow, so I’m forgetting about it.”

I grinned, leaning forward. “What did he do?”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m forgetting about it! Don’t sound so excited that Simon isn’t perfect.”

“I already knew that.”

She knocked her forehead against the door and groaned. “Good night, Adam.”

I rubbed the top of her curls. “Night, Baddie. Glad you’re home.”

Now that Baddie was back, tucked snug and alone in her apartment, it was time for me to relax and crash. All was right with the world.
