“Because you seem honest, and you don’t varnish the truth. I’m not saying your bad opinion will get anyone fired, but I’d like to get the lay of the land from several different sources.”

“So, you’ll be firing people?”

“The club isn’t doing well, but not many employees know. I hope you can keep it to yourself. For this place to continue, changes must be made, and the first is cutting the dead weight.”

I blinked at him, a little impressed by his no-BS attitude. Rhett. The name suited him. It was strong and sexy as hell. I nodded, trying and failing not to be flattered by his request.

“I can give you my hot takes, as long as you don’t fire anyone solely on that basis. I can be a petty bitch sometimes,” I warned him.

He laughed, a deep chuckle that made me smile too. “Agreed.”

His grin was quite ridiculous. Who looked like that?I snapped my mouth shut, worried I was grinning like a love-struck idiot. Great. Like I needed a school-girl crush on a man way older, wiser, and a hell of a lot richer than me. Rhett Sutton was a billionaire. He’d bought the entire country club. I didn’t need to be a genius to know he was out of my league. Still, he was nice to look at.

“I, um, better get back to work,” I said after a long moment where his eyes stayed on mine. His were so dreamy, like a calm and cooling ocean.

“Right. Don’t let the boss see you slacking when he’s looking for folk to lay off,” he said lazily.

His words sent me scooting right back up the ladder, accompanied by his chuckle.
