“I love you so much,” I breathed.

He kissed my cheek and sat up to wipe the tear away. “I love you, too. Tell me what’s wrong.”

I took a deep breath. “I’m pregnant,” I said, getting right to the point. “You’re going to be a daddy.”

Denton stilled and looked down at my belly, where my hand still rested. Once his initial shock wore off, he placed a large, gentle hand over mine, his big fingers dwarfing my slender digits.

“A baby,” he breathed, seemingly in awe. “I never thought I would be a dad.”

More tears spilled out of my eyes. “Are you upset about it?”

“No.” He leaned down and softly pressed his mouth to mine. “I’m…surprised, for sure, but I’m happy. You’re going to be a wonderful mother.” His voice wobbled with emotion. “Beautiful and funny and loving.”

I smiled back. “And you’re going to be such anolddad,” I teased.

He threw his head back and laughed. “Clearly, not too old to make this one.”

I released his hand and held my arms out, beckoning him closer. “C’mere, old man.”

Denton stretched his long body out next to mine on the uncomfortable emergency room bed and pulled me into his arms. We lay sandwiched together, whispering soft, loving words to each other and to the tiny spark of life in my belly until the nurse came in with my paperwork.

And when it was time to go, he led me to the car and took me to our shared home.

Chapter Sixteen

Denton

“Oh no. I don’t think so.” I stomped to a halt next to the stepladder.

Marcie perched on tiptoe on the top step, leaning forward to pound a nail into the drywall. On the floor, a framed picture rested against the wall, ready to be hung.

“I can do this for you,” I insisted.

She looked down at me and rolled her eyes. “I’m pregnant, not broken. Anyway, I’m nesting.”

I gave her a skeptical look. “The baby book said that nesting doesn’t happen until the end.”

Marcie stepped off the ladder and peered up at me, hands on her hips with an exasperated expression on her face. “Okay, fine, I’m not nesting. But I do want to get settled though.”

I reached down and took the hammer from her and reached up to place the nail against the drywall, then looked back at Marcie for her approval. She motioned to the left and I scooched over a few more inches.

“I’m just still freaked out from the ER visit,” I admitted. I pounded the nail into the wall with one quick hit, then reached down and grabbed the framed painting. “I want to wrap you in bubble wrap or something. I’ve never really been around a pregnant woman before.”

“I don’t feel pregnant,” she said, reaching down and touching her still flat belly. “Definitely don’t look pregnant either.”

I cast a meaningful glance down to her noticeably larger breasts and smirked. She placed her hands over the swollen globes and laughed.

“Yeah, except for these,” she admitted, then winced at her own tentative touch. “They’re super sensitive, by the way.”

I leaned down and pressed a soft kiss on her neck. “I’ll be gentler on them tonight.”

She giggled as she stroked a hand down the front of my t-shirt, then lower, to cup my cock through my jeans. I hardened instantly against her exploring fingers, groaning as she stroked me through the heavy fabric.

“You’d better be,” she breathed as my lips traveled up to her ear to suck her lobe into my mouth and bite gently, making her shiver. “Not too gentle, though.”

“I did some googling,” I admitted as my fingers slipped under her shirt and cupped her sensitive breasts. “Apparently, when it comes to sex, just about everything is okay for healthy pregnant women.” I waggled my brows lecherously.

She shook her head, then gasped when I flicked her nipples with my thumbs through the lace of her bra. “God, how is it that a man your age can always be so perpetually horny?”
