“Will they buy it?”

He shrugged.

“I will go see Dana as soon as she’s able to receive visitors. I’ll tell her I didn’t see anything.”

“You will let her get away with it?” I asked, astonished. The Sam I knew would not let anyone get away with anything.

“Everyone deserves a second chance,” was all he said.

We fell asleep in my bed, me still dressed. When I woke the next morning, it was to the sound of Holly singing in the shower. Next to me, Sam stirred. “My God,” he muttered. “I must have died and gone to hell.”

I laughed and he turned to me with a smile. We kissed and I felt him push me into the bed, rolling on top of me, his kisses growing deeper. I pulled away, “Are you sure you’re strong enough?” I looked up at the cut on his head, to check if the plaster was still in place.

“Nothing is going to come between us again,” he said, his voice low and thick with emotion. There was so much strength in his hands when he pushed my clothes off, when he kissed me. I found myself trembling with anticipation as I pulled off his shirt. Our uncertainties and doubts of the past few weeks, the fear and relief of the past day, all melted into a powerful current of passion bringing the two of us together. We wanted to be together. The heat between us was incredible as I pulled him on top of me and he slid into me. We became one, the emotion between us raw and more intense than it had been even in the beginning, our passion heightened by the fire and how close he had come to death. We wanted life, this life, and to celebrate being alive. I arched my back and lifted my legs, wanting to feel him inside all of me. We came together, an incredible climax and release of sexual energy.

He collapsed onto the bed, a dreamy smile on his face.

“We could always just live here,” he said after a while, looking around my room. “We could put a tent in the corner for Ethan, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind.”

I looked around my messy room, with its cheap furniture and thin curtains, the bare floorboards unvarnished for years.

“I think I’d mind,” I said with a smile. “How are you going to ravage me with your son barely one meter way?”

“Good point!” he said, giving me a naughty look that told me he was ready to test his strength once more.
