When Skye turned out to be so moody and unpredictable, picking jealous fights and throwing tantrums, I’d longingly think of Natalie with whom I’d never argued. When Skye spent breathtaking amounts on jewelry and shoes, discussing clothes and fashion trends, I recalled fondly how Natalie had worn the same pair of jeans again and again. She’d always looked good though. Fantastic, if I thought about it. She didn’t need make-up, all that jazz. She had the kind of beauty that shone from within.

She’d only grown more beautiful with the years gone by. She still didn’t wear make-up and she hadn’t gained weight like so many women did. Yet, she didn’t obsess about food and exercise either. No endless droning on about calories and diets, intermittent fasting and nutritional supplements.

I caught hold of my thoughts.

Jesus, I was besotted.

I couldn’t let anyone notice or they’d lose respect for me.

Even Natalie couldn’t know.

I may be trying to present myself as a more decent human being but even she would not like this soppy excuse for a man.

We got packed and prepared to head out for the airport for our flight back to Boston.

Everything was back to normal with Dana.

When we were seated in the plane, I glanced over at her and saw her playing an online game on her phone. I settled back into my seat, reassured.

I had dodged a bullet there.

Or so I thought.
