“Good luck! If things go well, then you have got to get yourself a lottery ticket.”

I laugh, but I’m not too sure things are going to go well. It seems like everything with Rob ends in disaster. I mean, let’s not kid ourselves. Rob and I are both going to want this badly. We’re way too competitive, and one of us is going to end up hurt.

I should be the mature, responsible one and end this. It’s only right. It’s not fair for me to grapple with him.

“Have fun!” Robyn says as she drops me off.

I just wave and laugh as she makes the “call me” sign.

Seriously, how do I get myself into these things?

I head on inside, knocking first before entering. Rob's clearly rearranged the furniture because the couch has been moved out of the way, and there's plenty of space.

“Are you ready?” he demands.

“‘Hi, how are you, Katie?’” I ask in a mock deep voice.

“I don’t sound like that,” he protests.

“No. You sound a little sexier.”

Rob grins at me. “That so?”

Why? Why is it so natural for me to flirt with him? A habit, I guess. Ugh.

I bend down and remove my shoes and socks.

“are feet? Okay.”

I just shake my head. “For the record, I think this is a terrible idea.”

“It’s a great idea,” he says. “Maybe once you get started at work, you can hook me up and get me my meal for free. Where’s your jo?”

“Oaken Diner.”

He gapes at me. “Are you shitting me?”

“I would never shit you. It would hurt too much. Make my ass bleed—”

“You’re serious?”

“Why would I lie about that?”

“But…” His face is turning purple again.

“Are you ready for this?”

“No. You’re right. This is stupid.” He turns and heads for his room.

I should probably just let this go and leave it at that, but he seems so pissed off that I can’t help hurrying after him. I shut the door behind me. “What’s going on?”

“I can’t believe you would get a job there. You and Cherise…”

“Are you and her going steady now?” I mock.

He glowers at me. “Don’t.”

“I shouldn’t go there? Seriously? You’re the one… Look, she’s not bad at all. She helped me out.”
