Crossing his arms, he grits, “I’m not driving that purple tampon. Either we take my car or you’re on your own.”

Giving him a dirty look, I turn from him and walk to the poolside garage where I have my car parked when a tingle ices my spine. Where did that come from? Feels like...feels like....something’s wrong...

I gasp in fear when I see two black figures with masks before their faces, jump out of the bushes and I freeze like a sparrow before a snake.

“Slade!” I yell at the top of my lungs, right when they grab me and I thrash, while Persy starts barking like she’s gone mad. She bites into their pants, but her teeth can’t do much damage and the men easily shake her off.

My eyes widen in distress as they drag me toward the bushes to...to kidnap me?No, no, no!And I struggle against them so hard that it starts hurting me more than them.

“Ouww!” I yelp, when the men get ripped away from my body and I fall to the ground. Blinking, I look up at Dom’s face and he’s rampant, full on crazed and frenzied. His suit is off and he’s only in his shirt, fighting the men with his bare hands.

Sitting up, I tug Persy to my chest who tries to insist on helping Dom as he grabs the intruder’s and slams their heads together, causing them to wail in pain. He kicks at their legs and I swear I hear bones pop. He goes after their ribs, their livers, firing punch after punch until I grow dizzy.

His lips are pulled, showing his teeth and his eyes are bottomless making him look like he’s not even a human anymore and I gulp, getting up and I’m about to run into the house when a black car breaks through our gates.

There’s more. More of them are coming and I panic.

“Slade...!” I yell and he snarls,

“Run back into the house. Hide.”

Yes, do it. Do as he says. “B...but...” I stutter, surprised that I don’t want to leave him alone. What if something happens to him? My stomach drops at the thought and I race over to my car, opening the glove compartment, snatching the handgun I keep there for emergencies I never thought would occur...

“Let go of me!” I scream when someone grabs me by my legs, causing me to fall on my stomach on the grass and the gun gets knocked out of my hand. Turning around, I kick at the stranger and I think it’s a new one, the one who must’ve been in the car because there’s an odd tattoo on his hand.

Shoving my heel in his chest, I yell, “Let me go...aaah...,” I get flung into the air, thrown over a shoulder but I fight and the fighting causes us to topple into the pool right when a gun fires.

Someone’s been shot.

Dom...?

I’m pushed under the surface, falling toward the bottom of the pool and I struggle, trying to fight off the stranger when Dom burst through the water like an arrow, yanking the man away from me and shoves him down, making it impossible for him to move.

Panicky I swim up to the surface, gasping for air and I swim over to the edge while coughing. The other two intruders are already in their car, the tires screeching when they burst through the now opened up gate.

Licking my lips that taste of chlorine, I throw a look over my shoulder, relief flooding me when Dom swims up to the surface. But maybe I shouldn’t be because his face is grim, his mouth hard and he gives me a look full of fury.

“Thought I told you to get inside and hide,” he snarls, “do you ever do as you’re told?”

“You should be happy. I could have easily left you,” I say between chattering teeth. Why didn’t I leave him? Why did I suddenly care so much about Dom? Because he cared about me...

Which nobody ever does...

“Is the man...?” I continue, trailing off and he gives a curt nod.

“Drowned him,” he replies and I shudder and try not to stare at how his white shirt is plastering against his muscles, showing just how powerful he is...

“Dom!” I exclaim when my eyes go further up. “You’ve been shot!” Blood is pouring from his bulky shoulder but he shrugs as if it’s nothing.

“It only grazed me. I’ll be fine.”

“You s...sure you’re okay?” I ask, getting out of the pool and he gives me a strange look. “Or, I mean um...it doesn’t really m...matter to me.”

“That’s what I thought.”

“What was that,” I say and my wet clothes are starting to make me feel cold, “where did they come from? Why did they attack us?”

“They were here for you,” he explains with little patience, “did you see the tattoo one of them had on his hand?”
