CHAPTER NINETEEN
The next evening, after Harper had finished with BookFlix, and he had finished work, Daniel knocked on her door.
“Ready?”
“Yes. Are you going to tell me where we are going?”
He was taking her out on a date. A proper date. This may only be temporary between them, but Daniel had never felt like this about a woman, and he may never again.
He still hadn’t heard anything from Josh Hawke. This afternoon he’d spent an hour on a video call with Fletcher and Olivia discussing PR angles and was feeling slightly agitated.
Correction; very fucking agitated.
Daniel hated to admit it, even to himself, but his confidence in coming out the other side of this a single man was dropping.
He was also starting to feel pangs of guilt about Harper even though, technically, it had nothing to do with her. And he wasn’t doing anything wrong. But if she heard he got engaged when he returned to New York and thought he’d lied to her, it would hurt her. And that didn’t sit right with him.
He never wanted her to hurt.
The more time he spent with her, the more important that was becoming.
The more important Harper was.
Daniel liked so much about her. He liked her body and the way she cried out his name when she orgasmed. He liked the way she played with her food and reorganized it on her plate before eating. He liked the tropical vanilla scent she spread on her legs every morning.
Daniel thought having a woman in his world all the time would be irritating.
Harper had left some items in his bathroom this morning and instead of feeling annoyed, he’d stood brushing his teeth, staring at them, wishing they would stay right where they were. Because it meant Harper would be with them.
Then he’d stared at himself in the mirror looking for signs of an alien takeover. Because this was not him. Ever.
And yet, it was with Harper.
So, Daniel had invited her on a date. He planned to enjoy every last minute he had with her and show her how much she meant to him.
Daniel had resources to make a woman feel special, and he was pulling out the big guns tonight to do just that. He hoped she would love it.
“No. I told you, it’s a surprise,” he said. “Have you got a jacket?”
“Just a little cardigan.”
Daniel looked at the tiny piece of clothing, shook his head, and took her hand. “Come with me.”
“We’re in Hawaii. I don’t think I’m going to need a jacket.”
She would for this.
Inside his wardrobe, he pulled out a Hugo Boss black bomber jacket. He held up the Ralph Lauren navy jacket he had tucked under his arm, working out which one would swamp her less.
“This one,” she said, taking the navy one from his arm. “Not that I will need it.”
He leaned in and kissed her. “Let’s go.”
Instead of going down in the lift, he pressed the button for the top floor, and she stared at him in question. He stared forward, forcing the smile from his face.
The familiar bar and pool area came into view and Daniel knew what Harper was thinking, and she was wrong. He took her hand and led her to another door, up a set of stairs and out onto another area of the roof.
It was barren and dirty.
