It was a fucking lot of money for the average person to say no to, let alone a woman betrayed.
And Mackenzie knew it.
Daniel ran his hand over his face.
The way Daniel saw it they had two options available to them: they could confront Mackenzie and share a snippet of the recording, or he could hire Black Hawke and let them deliver a nice juicy threat on behalf of the Dufort’s.
Effective but dirty.
The Dufort Dynasty wasn’t dirty, and it wasn’t in Daniel’s playbook—unless he was pushed.
He was a powerful player in New York City and no wallflower to sit across from in the boardroom. Now that he had cards to play, he was more than happy to pay a visit to the senator and update him on the status of his daughter’s engagement.
And he planned to do exactly that.
He just needed to make sure his brothers were on board with his entire plan. Because he wasn’t stopping there.
Yet again, their father’s philandering ways were destroying their lives, but Daniel was putting a stop to it.
He snapped back to the present as Fletcher asked, “What are you suggesting?”
Daniel shared his thoughts and after a robust discussion, they all sat staring at the floor and walls and knew there was little other option. Not when board members and their executive team were already whispering in the corners.
Very few people understood how delicate an organization could be when trust began to flounder. Daniel needed to act fast and aggressively, proving himself to be the powerful CEO he was.
And he fucking was.
No one, not even the founder, and his father, was going to destroy it. Not on his watch.
Daniel picked up his phone and dialed.
“Selena, set up an appointment with Senator Mackenzie for me this afternoon,” he instructed his executive assistant. “Then one with my father at 5:00 p.m. In my office.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Let them both know it’s not a request and keep both meetings confidential. Strictly. From everyone,” Daniel said, then paused for a moment. “Ask the flight team to prepare my jet for takeoff two hours later. Put me out of the office for two weeks.”
He never took leave.
Ever.
Fletcher and Hunter looked up from their phones, their eyebrows shooting to the ceiling. He looked away. Daniel Dufort answered to no one and for once in his life he was doing something for himself.
“As in out for a vacation?”
“Yes,” Daniel replied simply, as he tapped on his photo app and began scrolling through images of Harper. His heart began to beat rapidly in his chest.
God, she’s beautiful.
He missed her so fucking much.
“Where shall I tell them you’re heading?” Selena asked.
“I’m returning to Honolulu.”
It might be too late, but Daniel knew if he didn’t try, he’d regret it for the rest of his life.
