Chapter 15

Abby

“Ouch,” Leo laughs asI hit him in the eye with a grape.

“Oops.” I giggle, grabbing another one and popping it into my mouth.

“Okay, one more time. I’ll catch it, I swear,” he insists, a sexy smile taking shape on his lips.

It’s lunchtime, and for the past five minutes, I’ve been tossing grapes at Leo because he was so confident about being able to catch them in his mouth. He’s missed every single time. But I haven’t laughed so hard and smiled so wide in a long time.

“Sure.” I grin, grabbing another grape. “One more time and then we pick up all the ones you failed to catch.”

“Fine,” he says, rolling his eyes, and then opens his mouth, ready for the next one. Squinting, I eye up my target, then let the grape fly. It sails through the air, but it doesn’t make it to Leo’s mouth because someone snatches it out of the air.

“Do you guys even know how to be civilized?” Isaac sneers as he looms over the table. My smile slips, all the fun we were just having evaporates. “This is a pristine school, not a farm. So stop acting like a bunch of animals.”

“We're just having a little fun, chill, man,” Leo says, sitting up in his seat, glaring at my stepbrother.

“A little fun? Do you see the mess you’ve made? Everyone is watching you. You're making a spectacle of yourselves,” Noah says, coming to stand next to Isaac. Looking over Leo’s shoulder, I cringe when I see the ground littered with grapes. But we're so close to the wall and away from everyone else, I don’t see the big deal.

“We were gonna clean up when we were done,” I tell him. “It’s really not a big deal.”

“Not a big deal?” Isaac asks. “What if someone slipped and hurt themselves?”

“Really?” I ask. “Hurt themselves? We’re angels, Isaac. We can just heal ourselves. If anything was to get hurt, it would only be their pride that gets bruised.”

“At least they would have pride, unlike you lot,” Noah says.

And of course, just to add a cherry on top of their little berating, Luke decides to take the long way around the table to get to his friends. He knows there's grapes on the floor, but he proceeds to walk that way. And what does he do? Slips. Just fucking perfect.

“What the heck!” Luke shouts, drawing even more attention our way. My face starts to heat up as I watch him stand. He looks at the smooshed grapes on his back, flicking some pieces off on the ground with a disgusted look on his face. “What is this?”

He looks over at us, and I fight the urge to slink down in my chair.

“What on Earth is going on over here?” one of the teachers says.Awesome.I really want the ground to open up under me and swallow me back down to Hell right about now. “Miss Morningstar, what do you think you’re doing? I’m not sure how things are done where you’re from, but here, we do not waste food and make such a mess. You could have really hurt someone.”

“This is really more of a big deal than it needs to be,” Leo adds. My eyes flick to his, and I can see he’s pissed where I’m embarrassed.

“You think so, Mr... Who are you?”

It’s Leo’s turn to blush. “Leo, ma’am, Leo Atwood.”

“Ah, yes. The incubus,” she says with a sour look on her face. Now I’m the one who’s pissed. All these people do is judge others. I’m getting really sick of it.

“Well, Luke went out of his way to go around the table and walk over the mess. We were just about to clean everything up before they came over,” Leo waves his hand in Isaac and Noah’s direction.

“Well, you shouldn’t have had to clean up the mess because there shouldn’t have been one in the first place. The two of you can stay after lunch and clean up, not just this mess, but the entire cafeteria,” she huffs, raising her chin and turning on her heel, leaving no room for argument.

“I’ll be sending you my dry-cleaning bill,” Luke says, flashing me a grin before he takes off back to the same damn table he was just at. He really got up, walked out of his way to make a scene just to humiliate us.

“Go ahead,” I tell him. “It’s Isaac’s daddy who will be paying for it anyway.” I grin, trying not to show how much this is affecting me.

“You really are pathetic, aren't you?” Isaac sarcastically says. “Not after money, eh? Yeah, sure,” he shakes his head. The bell rings, making the corner of Isaac’s lips kick up. “Enjoy your cleaning. Hope you don’t fall behind in your classes. I’d hate for you to fail and have to leave Angelic Academy.” His grin fuels my fire, and I really wanna punch him in his pretty boy face.

“Seriously, Hellfire, just leave. It’s not going to get any better for you,” Noah informs, and the look he gives me is almost one of... pity? What the hell?He turns around and follows after Isaac.

“I hate them. Like Ireallyhate them,” Leo growls as he watches the guys walk away.
