The vampire bodies convulse as my magic wraps around them, squeezing the life out of them. I can feel it, seeping into me, making me stronger—better. I absorb it, not worrying about consequences because they don’t matter.

Not when I have this much power.

They turn to ash, exploding into the air and floating down softly onto the ground. I watch, more than satisfied with the level of strength. I’d been so weak before. How had I never realized just how much I was missing out on?

“Bronywyn.”

Rubbing sweaty palms on my pants, I turn to Tarnley, my smile dying when I take in his horrified expression. “What’s wrong? Were you hurt?” I rush forward, but he takes a cautious step back.

“What did you do?”

I turn and glance back at the ashes. “What do you mean? They were going to kill us.”

“We could have handled them.”

“We have somewhere to be, so I took care of it.”

“You used your dark magic.”

“So? It’s here, I might as well.” I can’t see why he would be so upset. After all, I did what we were both going to do anyway, didn’t I?

“You—”

“We need to go,” I urge him. “They’re waiting for us.”

“You just turned them to fucking ash, Bronywyn!”

“And they would have done much worse to us if I hadn’t, right? Who knows how much damage they already caused by holding us up. You’re going to need to blur us there.”

“We need to talk about this.”

“Later.” I walk toward him. “I promise.”

A muscle in the side of his jaw tightens then releases, and finally, he nods. “I need to call in my team before anyone sees this.”

“Do it.”

With another nod, he withdraws his phone and taps on the screen. “Clean up. My place. Ashes and three dead humans.” He ends the call and shoves the phone back into his pocket then reaches for me. “Let’s go.”
