whatever. They needed to know why she’d disappeared off the

face of the planet. She didn’t go out very often and she was

busy with school, but she was social enough on the weekends

and she didn’t usually decline their invites to go out for dinner

or catch a movie or get an evening coffee.

“I’d have to clear it with Miss Finley,” Snake said. “I can go

ask her now.”

“Please do. I’d like to go out for a few hours, from nine

until eleven or twelve, if you need to be specific. Also, the

mall downtown. I need new bras. And some tampons. I’m sure

they have one of those random retail health and beauty stores

that sells cosmetics and has a pharmacy attached.” She

watched Snake’s face flush hotly. He was totally unflappable

until it came to lady products. Good to know.

Jean practically choked from the sink, and rattled dishes to

hide the noise he made. Haley had to duck over her bowl and

stuff oatmeal into her mouth to keep from giggling. She’d

come fully stocked with everything she needed, but Snake

didn’t know that. The one thing he hadn’t done was snoop

through her bags, thank God.

“I’ll be right back.” Snake heaved his big body out of the

chair. He picked up his bowl, cleaned it out quickly, hoovering

food faster than any human should be capable of, then handed

his dish off to Jean and ran for the kitchen door. He basically

defined brick shit house, always in jeans and a black t-shirt

and combat boots, which must have been the official

bodyguard footwear code, but damn could he move fast.

Haley waited. And waited. She finished eating. Took her

bowl to Jean as well. Still waited, hovering around the kitchen.

Finally, Snake was back. He grunted out something that
