“It’s okay. We have to focus on the problem. The problem now being you’re two men down. If it’s one or both of the other men, they got their tracks covered well. Don’t think I haven’t been watching, but there’s nothing to suspect, other than knowing it had to be one of us who helped Micah get onto Eduardo’s property.”

“That’s the only thing we got, nothing more, and we wouldn’t know shit if Cristiano hadn’t survived that attack.” I bite the inside of my lip. “I’ll think of something.”

I don’t know what, because now I’m stuck with more questions than I had before, and more dark secrets people wanted to stay buried in the past.

The doctor approaches to the door, and I bolt up. Marcus joins me.

The solemn look on the doctor’s face is not good at all. He wore the same expression before.

“I’m sorry. I’m afraid the news is the same,” the doctor says.

“The same?”

“He’s still in a coma. I can’t say when he’ll wake up. It could be tonight, tomorrow, a few days, months.”

A hand squeezes my heart. “Months.” I say that more to myself than to him.

“We’re doing the best we can to give him what he needs. Aside from the head trauma, his body was pretty messed up, so he’s going to be with us for quite some time.”

“Can we see him?”

“For five minutes. Then I suggest you go home and get some rest. One of us will call you if anything changes, and of course, you’re welcome to come back in the morning.”

“Alright, thank you.”

“Follow me.”

He leads us to a private room. When I see Cristiano attached to tubes and looking barely alive, guilt weighs me down.

This happened to him again because he was helping me.

I have to get to the bottom of this before something worse happens.

It’s started already.

Cristiano is the same today, and I’ve only left him because of the doctor’s orders.

When I get home, I smell gingerbread and already know I have most welcomed visitor. She was on my list of people to talk to.

I walk into the kitchen and find Estelle taking the bread out of the oven while Lucia holds Mia.

I shouldn’t be surprised to see Estelle. She was at the hospital every day when Cristiano was last in. This type of news was likely to bring her back.

All three look at me when they hear me, and I shake my head.

“He’s the same,” I say.

Estelle floats over to me and gives me a hug.

“My dear boy, I’m so sorry.” She taps my chest.

“Thanks for coming.”

“Of course, I’d come.”

“I’ll let you guys talk,” Lucia says with a little smile and takes Mia out of the room.

I lower myself into the chair, and Estelle sits in front of me.
