“I think you put too much faith in me.” He laughs hoarsely at my words.

“I’m not,” I say with a hard shake of my head. “I know you’re capable of being a good person. I wouldn’t have loved you so much if I didn’t believe in that. But you can only be that person if you will it to be. And when you do, it won’t be because someone fixed you. It’s because you wanted to fix yourself to be better for that person.”

He nods, straightening his back as relief flows through him. It looks like my words have somehow released him. I truly hope he finds what he’s looking for.

“Thank you, Sienna. Truly,” Jax says as his gaze sweeps over me. “And really, I’m sorry I ruined what we had.”

“That’s fine.” I shrug. “We’re just meant to be with other people.”

“You guys look good together. You and Kayden.”

“Well, he broke up with me so . . .”

He swears under his breath. “He’s such a fucking idiot.”

An unexpected laugh floats out of me. Finally, something we can both agree on.

“Yeah,” I say sorrowfully. It’s hard not to feel choked up over the thought of Kayden. I try to tell myself that I don’t miss him, that I don’t need him anymore, but my heart always betrays my real feelings.

What I had with Kayden was precious and I will always remember and treasure it forever. I don’t feel bitter about the fact that he left. I’m happy because I got to be with such an amazing man who taught me things about myself that I otherwise would never even know.

I don’t know what’ll happen if he ever comes back. But Brent’s right; I can’t just sit around and mope until he does.

In the meantime, it’s best to just keep moving on and keep living.
