As another roll of the heavens roars a warning against kicking her out, I don’t exactly feel as if I have much of a choice.

“Fine.” I hold my hands up. “Fine, you can stay tonight. Only tonight.”

I stand up, dust down my hands, and wonder what the hell I might have in the freezer for a meal. Nothing that’d suit her fancy tastes I’m sure.

“This ain’t no five star city hotel,” I warn her. “You’re getting no special treatment here.”

I’ll tend to her injuries, but I’m not about to carry her around on a silk cushion.

This doesn’t seem to discourage Lizzie at all. She raises her hands in acceptance and claps them together in a grateful vow.

“Absolutely!” she promises. “No problem at all. I don’t need special treatment. I’ll keep myself to myself.” Raising a finger to her chest, she makes the sign of a cross over her heart. “You won’t even know I’m here.”

For the first time, in a long while, I almost laugh out loud.

I sincerely doubt that I’ll forget her presence that easily. No red-blooded man would be able to ignore someone who looks like her, especially when they’re sleeping just a few yards from his bedroom.

Dammit, but what the hell have you gotten yourself into here, Walker?
