Chase arranged for a beat-up sedan to be brought around back so we could be more or less incognito on the way to the safe house.

It was a brand new place Chase bought through a friend of a friend. We were careful to make sure there was no paper trail leading back to us so we would have a safe place to hide from the Demons and law enforcement if need be.

I drove us out of town and towards the woods. Addie stayed curled up in the front seat, looking out the window. She was really silent. I wasn’t sure if that was because she didn’t trust me or if she was just processing everything that had happened.

“We’ll get you back to your family,” I said after half an hour of silence. “I promise.”

She looked down at her lap. “I checked my phone at the bar,” she said. “I had good reception, but no one texted or called me.” Her brow furrowed. “My parents thought I was kidnapped and I didn’t even get a call from them. Why?”

My chest tightened. That only confirmed my suspicions but I had hoped I was wrong. The thought that her parents would even stage a kidnapping with the Demons was repulsive. “I don’t know,” I said quietly.

“I’ll call my brother when we get to the safe house,” she said. “He might have some answers.”

I turned the car down an unpaved, unmarked road. After fifteen more minutes of driving, we reached a log cabin surrounded by nothing but a lot of trees. It wasn’t visible from the main road and the chances of anyone following us here were slim to none. I was careful to keep an eye on everything.

“We’re here,” I said. “Call your brother. He might have some information.”
