Catherine: Ok, you guys we get it. Adrien see you later too. I want my girl back.
Catherine puts her phone away and looks at me.
“I better go. I need some time with my best girl.”
I smile over at my best friend. I’ve really missed her since she moved.
“Good, she’s missed you, that’s all. See you later.”
We hang up, and Catherine doesn’t say a single word. She grabs hold of me and just bear hugs me. I almost can’t breathe.
“If you kill me, the only bridesmaids at your wedding will be Bryan’s cousin and Jaime.”
She lets me go, and I see tears filling up her eyes.
“Sara, I didn’t know you were still hurting for the guy so much. I feel like a lousy friend. I should have pushed you for more information on him.. If I’d have known, I could have saved you all this trouble.”
“Hey, less of that Catherine, you know as well as I do that I needed the distance. But I wish I’d listened to you about moving out here. I could really get used to the sun.”
“You better. Los Angeles is going to be a hell of a lot different from New York. Sara, why didn’t you tell me about Adrien offering you a job and living together? It’s a huge step. I’m not trying to talk you out of it.”
“Adrien wanted to tell you both. I told him not to. I didn’t want to take any of this week away from you both.”
“Sara, you know I love you like a sister, but that’s just stupid. God, I am so happy. This is the best wedding present. You and Adrien together, now I can stop worrying about you.”
“Catherine, I’m a big girl.”
“Sara, I will never stop looking out for you. The last two years have been cruel to you, work wise.”
“Hey, you didn’t know how bad it had gotten.”
“No, I didn’t, and we’re going to unpack that, but not two days before my wedding. What do you say? We just go back to my place, hang out and have a girls' day in?”
“That sounds perfect.”
I pay for our coffees and pastries and meet Catherine at the door. That’s what I love about my best friend. You don’t need to be going a mile a minute. Sometimes some quality time with your best friend is all a girl needs.
Catherine isthe best friend every girl needs. She’s supportive when she needs to be and tells you straight when you need it, not when you want it. When you NEED it. I’ve not been listening or being straight with her. I should have told her how much everything was getting to me, but who needs that downer in your life? If I’d have just accepted her help instead of fighting it, I know for a fact I’d have been happier sooner.
I guess seeing her get teared up made me realize that. I have been a super shitty friend.
We spend the afternoon laughing and joking around like we did when we were in college, and it’s unbelievable how much fun we’re having.
Neither of us was in the mood for drinking either, so when the boys get back around six, they have very surprised looks on their faces.
“You owe me $10,” says Adrien, laughing, holding out his hand.
Catherine and I look at each other and laugh.
The boys come and sit next to us, each going to their respective partner.
Adrien kisses me on the cheek.
Bryan grabs hold of Catherine’s face and kisses her so hard it starts to get a little uncomfortable. Catherine pulls away, totally taken away by the kiss.
I curl up closer to Adrien, putting my legs over his, his hand finding my knee instantly.
“You guys seem like you had fun,” says Catherine.
