“What I’m trying to tell you is there weren’t any onlookers. You’ve been to that area. There are no sidewalks or really any good place for anyone to gather.” Gary gazed down at his hands, then looked back at June. “I know you don’t want to hear this, but I think you’ve reached the end.”
After a long moment, June nodded, the sounds of children playing in the park at odds with the somber mood on the bench where she and Gary sat.
“That’s what Cameron said when I contacted the last three on my list and got nothing.” June’s lips twisted. “I told him if you didn’t come through with any names, I was done.”
“Ah, Junie.” Gary’s voice softened. “I’m sorry this didn’t end as you hoped. As we both hoped. I wanted answers, too. Aubrey, well, she was special. Whoever hurt her deserves to be punished.”
“Will you promise to keep me informed if any new information comes to light?”
“It’s not—”
“I understand it’s a long shot, Gary, especially after all this time, but please, please, just promise me if anything new comes in on this case, you’ll let me know.”
He nodded. “You’ll be the first one I call.”
