Chapter 12

Tanner

Maverick continues to massage my neck as I stare at him. He is breathtakingly beautiful. Like, he should be in magazines, or at least on a sexy calendar. I feel like I’m floating. My nerves are no longer going haywire, and I feel like I could take a really long nap. My question still lingers in the air.

“Stop looking at me like that,” he growls. “I’m not a good guy, Tanner.” Maverick pulls his hand away and stands up from the couch.

I frown. “Looking like what?”

Before he can answer someone bangs on the door.

“Prez, Dom’s back.” A voice booms from the other side.

“Send him up!” Maverick says as he runs a hand through his dark hair.

Travis comes in and immediately comes to sit next to me. “You okay, Tanner?”

I nod. “Yeah. I’m good.”

“We need to know what happened before Maxine came out there.” Maverick is all business now.

I fidget with my fingers before speaking. “They were in the booth when I came from the kitchen. I was alone because Karissa was on break, and Dani was helping Maxine in the back.” I swallow. “I didn’t know who they were…. I didn’t see the name on the back of their vests. I thought they were just guys from the club.”

Travis rubs a hand over my back. “It’s okay.”

“They just ordered water. Of course they said some raunchy things to me.”

“What did they say?” Maverick’s eyes narrow.

“I can’t remember exactly, but something along the lines of…. wanting to eat…...me.” I cringe as the words come out.

Maverick shakes his head and curses under his breath.

“They asked if I was someone's old lady and I said no, but I was Dom’s sister, so whatever they were trying to play with me wasn’t going to happen.”

Travis squeezed my shoulder as he glanced up to Maverick.

“They didn’t know who you were at first then?” Travis asks.

“I don’t think so….” I lay my head in my hands. “God this is my fault… I opened my big mouth.” Tears clog my throat.

“No, Tanner, this is not your fault.” Travis pulls me in his arms.

Maverick turns his back to us, and I see him pick up something out of the corner of my eye before he hurls it across the room. Whatever it was crashes against the wall, and I flinch.

“What did they want?” I ask as I pull away from my brother.

“There's nothing you need to worry about, you will be safe here.” Travis tells me.

“You will live here. You will only leave with our permission, and only if one of the brothers is with you.” Maverick’s tone is stern and hard.

“So I’m just supposed to move in here and not ask questions?” I say looking from Travis to Maverick.

“Tanner….” Travis starts with a sigh.

This is stupid. This entire day is bullshit.

I stand up from the couch. “That’s really not good enough for me Trav. Three months ago I was trapped in a Catholic boarding school. Peeking my eyes open during the prayer at the chapel was about as wild as it got.” My feet begin to move, pacing around the room. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve been exposed to entirely too many naked people. I was groped by a nasty ass biker, who ran his tongue all over my neck. Then I was held at gunpoint on a day that is supposed to be one of the best days of my life, and now I’ve apparently ingested drugs!”
