“I’m sorry, Julie. I shouldn’t have left it all to you. I promise, I’ll do better.”
I frowned at her. “Where did that come from?”
She leaned across her desk toward mine. “Well, it was pointed out last night that I can be a bit of an entitled brat, and should put others first.”
I blinked. I’d like to buy a drink for the person who hit her with that truth, like a brick to the face.
“I hope that wasn’t your date saying that.” I found myself saying instead, and she heaved another sigh.
“He wasn’t the nice guy I thought he was. Or maybe he is, but he speaks his mind. I don’t know. When I told him about leaving early like that, he wasn’t impressed. We had a fight.”
I almost apologised, and then I realised that it wasn’t my fault. “Oh.” I finally said.
She shrugged, offering me a small smile.
“I guess you won’t be seeing him again then.” I said, smiling back at her.
She laughed. “God yes, I’m seeing him tonight! I swear, nobody has ever pushed my buttons like that! I’m trying to get him to send me a dick pic right now, but he says I need to prove myself first. Oh! I’m going to go and take a pic of my boobs for him.” She was up and running to the bathroom with her phone, while I just stared blankly at her empty desk. What the hell was wrong with young people? I was definitely born in the wrong era.
Making a decision at last, I grabbed my phone and entered Adam’s number, opening a text message.
Hmmm… What to send?
Me: I hope you got home safe last night.
Oh my god. That’s pathetic. Lame. Wifely, almost. I groaned, setting the phone aside, to try and concentrate on my work. That lasted all of ten seconds, when my phone pinged next to me.
MyBiker: Of course. Powered by a great cup of coffee. Did you sleep well?
I chewed my lip. I wished he’d added two words to the end of that text. Little angel. I’m a lost cause.
Me: I was a little lonely, but yes.
As soon as I sent it… Slut. Whore. Tease.
My brief feeling of euphoria dissipated, as my mind taunted me once more.
