Chapter Nine

ADAM

I swear, she brought out the protector in me. I mean, look at her. She couldn’t fight off anyone, she’s so dainty. I couldn’t risk someone hurting her. And she wasn’t running scared at my clumsy attempt to flirt with her. After the nightmare I’d had, since those fucking Bennett tossers came into my life, maybe for once, something good could happen.

I followed her to her door, having flicked the remote locking on the car as we walked away. Fuck me. It was so icy cold. It was out of the blue, but I loved it, for the fact that it had put her in my car. And now me in her house.

She handed me her keys, when I stepped in front of her, and held out my hand. I unlocked the door, and let her follow me inside, but led her to wait by the door.

“You hear anything untoward, get out and run.”

She practically gulped in response. I was scaring her. Dammit.

“It’s okay.” Selfishly taking the opportunity to touch her, I stroked her hair, offering comfort while taking some for myself. Then I walked through the house, room by room, flicking lights on, and checking around. What a great way to see her home. I left the hall lights on, and made my way back to her, still waiting dutifully by the door, as I’d pretty much commanded.

I grinned. “All safe. Or empty, at least. Although, maybe I should check your bedroom again, look under the bed for monsters.” How I wanted to be the monster, but not under the bed.

She giggled.

“I know I’m small, but I know who the real monsters are these days.”

I followed her into the living room, because she hadn’t booted me out, and I’m an ass. I didn’t want to leave.

She slid her coat off, and tossed it on the sofa.

“The least I can do is make you a coffee. Keep you awake for the drive home.” She shot me a grin, and then closed her eyes. She took a breath, shaking her head.

“You okay?” She nodded, looking pink in the cheeks again. I loved it. I wanted to make them do that again, as I slowly fucked her, and again, as I made her come, over and over. Jesus. Who am I? Fucking Casanova?

“Coffee would be great, thanks. And you’re right. It is the least you can do.”

She frowned at me. “I mean… I don’t have anything else to offer…” Hell yes, you do. I’m a bastard. Down boy.

“I might have some biscuits. Let me check.” I grabbed her hand, stopping her from disappearing.

“I was kidding. Honestly. Coffee will be great, thanks. I take it black, no sugar.”

She grimaced, and I smirked at her. “Not how you like it, huh? Bet you like it sweet. Frothy. Chocolate or cinnamon sprinkled on it. Glitter, maybe?”

She laughed. “Oh, so now I’m a teenage girl? I’m twenty two, for god’s sake.”

Perfect. I might be way too old for her, but at least I’m not going to be breaking the law, when I seduce her.

My phone buzzed with a text, so I slid it from my pocket, and took a look.

Bennettdicks: We’re waiting.

Fuck me! I banged out a quick text back.

Me: With the client now. Bear with me. I’m hired. I can say more when I’m alone.

Bennettdicks: Our place in the morning. Bring breakfast.

Me: Fine, but I’m expensing it.

Bennettdicks: Prick.

Yep. That was my boss. Or one of them. No idea which. I groaned, sliding my phone back in my pocket. I’d lied to them. Not about being hired, but about being with the client. Not that Julie wasn’t also the client. But I didn’t want to tell them about her. Why? Not sure yet. Just a hunch. She’s safer if they don’t know she exists.
